Blue Moon

Blue Moon (Jack Reacher 24)

Lee Child2019
'This is one of his best' - The Times Jack Reacher is back in a brand new white-knuckle read from Lee Child. It's a random universe, but once in a blue moon things turn out just right. In a nameless city, two rival criminal gangs are competing for control. But they hadn’t counted on Jack Reacher arriving on their patch. Reacher is trained to notice things. He’s on a Greyhound bus, watching an elderly man sleeping in his seat, with a fat envelope of cash hanging out of his pocket. Another passenger is watching too ... hoping to get rich quick. As the mugger makes his move, Reacher steps in. The old man is grateful, yet he turns down Reacher’s offer to help him home. He’s vulnerable, scared, and clearly in big, big trouble. What hold could the gangs have on the old guy? Will Reacher be in time to stop bad things happening? The odds are better with Reacher involved. That's for damn sure.

It’s tough to write a series of books when the formula is always the same... Reacher finds somebody in need of help against a group of bad guys... Reacher disposes of all the bad guys (using military planning) and saves the day. So, the books all seem the same. Yet, I still enjoy the read. Finished in 4 sittings.

Did Lee Child hire a ghostwriter? Since when is Reacher cutting heads off with a saw and killing people based on the say-so of a one night stand? Also, the whole book is written as if everyone was cold and methodical like Reacher. This was just weird.

3.5 This Reacher book was a little different than the others, and ..... I think that's okay, for the most part. Like most Reacher books, he strolls (or, in this case, rolls) into town. He notices an old man about to lose an envelope full of money on the bus, and sees that someone else notices. Reacher saves the day, but, of course, it's more complicated than that. A lot more. It seems that he has stumbled into a town where the Albanians and the Ukrainians split the town and run it. And the old man owes the Albanians a lot of money. To buy time for the old man and his wife come into some money, Reacher starts slowly killing off a couple of guys from one side, and then the other. They each think the other side is doing the killing, but as it continues, they wonder if it's the Russians moving in. A LOT of bloodshed -- dozens and dozens of bodies (truly) pile up. It sounds like a movie script (who knows?). It wasn't the smooth Reacher that strolls in, helps some people out by messing up some bad people for the good, and eases away. I docked half a star, but the non-bloodshed parts were very good and has the usual type of humor Child is known for. Pretty good, but far from my favorite.

The worst JR novel. Was difficult to finish. JR was killing people left right and centre without any thought... and it seemed like somebody else wrote the whole novel and used Lee Child’s name.
