The Official Languages Act and complementary official- language policies and programs seek to ensure that services from federal institutions are available to Canadians in the official language of their choice and to promote the equitable participation of members of both language groups in these institutions, regardless of their cultural origin or mother tongue. The new Act also aims to allow those Canadians who wish to do so to benefit from the advantages of the presence of these two languages in our country. This document is a guide for Canadians concerning the Official Languages Act.
