ano. Ano. ANO! Zrcadlo, zrcadlo mě velmi mile překvapila! Čekala jsem nějaké strašně velké klišé, protože to napsala milionářka a modelka, která ví, že se její kniha bude prodávat tak jako tak, protože, pozor- je milionářka a modelka. Doufám tedy, že většinu z toho napsala ona, a ne Rowan..
Jak říkám, knížka mě mile překvapila. Dějová linka byla zajímavá a napínavá, moc mě bavilo řešit případ Naomi společně se Zrzi a z velké části i s Naominou sestrou Ash. Konec jsem nečekala, asi jsem ho mohla čekat, ale, wow.. Hustý!
Jak jsem si tak pročítala recenze ostatních lidí, prý je ta kniha hodně podobná Papírovým městům, ve kterých Cara mimo jiné hrála hlavní roli... Já Papírová města ale ani nečetla, a ani jsem neviděla film, takže nemám s čím srovnávat, a tím pádem tomu nemám co vytknout. Jasný, občas to trochu klišé místy bylo, občas to bylo opakování se toho stejného dokola, ale i tak mě to bavilo a nelituji toho, že jsem si to přečetla.

Anyway, our narrator, Red, I expected to be a girl. A lesbian girl specifically. From the beginning. But the author spent SO much effort trying to trick us into thinking Red was a boy that I think she managed to actually make Red a boy. Like... I was looking for opportunities for the character to be female but there were too many indications of maleness; mostly talking about “other” boys or being around girls... the sort of thing that actual *ahem* lesbians don’t say... so I call all kinds of bullshit. It was a gimmick. I don’t usually like this sort of a gimmick. I especially don’t like the timing of the reveal. 65% of the way through a book you reveal your narrator is a queer woman? And in the same gesture accuse her of sexual assault? Fuck you. 

I also found the level of stakes in EVERYTHING exceptionally overmuch. Leo’s brother is tweaking AND has a gun AND is gonna kill someone AND is holding his mother hostage (a pre-installed padlock on an internal door??) AND is maybe going to kill his brother AND is all messed up by the suicide of his high school girlfriend who just happened to be a sex slave kidnapped by the same guy who attempted to murder Leo’s best friend, also sex slaving her, AND is his favorite teacher and mentor AND is trying to sex slave the girl Leo’s in love with?

Like really?

Lastly, this book needed an editor like whoa. Errors errors everywhere. And that’s besides the major issues listed above. 

Surprisingly enjoyable book despite it all. I don’t know why I say that. Cover is better than the book. Maybe I just like queer lead characters even if they’re sort of caricatures.

I feel like the book was a little bit of everywhere... and not in the best way. I feel like whilst the characters were trying to be different, they all were gloomy with tragic backstories and this frustrated me at times. I really enjoyed the beginning and end of the book but the middle just seemed a bit lost on me. There were all these irrelevant 'side quests' that didn't really impact on the story in any way except being a filler.
All in all, I think Cara Delavingne should stick to being an actress.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this. BUT I REALLY REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK.

This YA contemporary, mystery/thriller was so gripping from very early on. A striking mix of close friends, misfits, and members of popular local band 'Mirror, Mirror' are thrown into a minefield when band member and best friend, Naomi, goes missing. 

The mystery is well-paced and intertwined with a story of discovery and coping, as each band member struggles with different issues of family and self-discovery, as well as what happened to their best friend. This book could have been an episode of Skins, I swear.

I thought the journey of sexuality and being one's self, particularly with MC, Red, was brilliantly done. I've seen some criticism of sexuality being used as a 'plot twist', that the way characters reacted to certain scenes was poorly done etc.

I don't agree. This is a book about teenagers, emotional teenagers with incredibly complex backgrounds and experiences, and I thought the scenes that occur and the way characters reacted were realistic and justified. It was raw and emotional and, quite understandably, sometimes irrational.

Heads up, there is a lot of cursing in this book. At times, I felt it was a bit over excessive, but mostly it was fitting to the personality and circumstances of the characters. 

I also felt that parts of the book had a quite detached writing style, which is kinda disappointing because this is such a raw and emotional story. Although, there were also parts of the book where I definitely felt serious emotion and there may or may not have been tears. I wish this had been more consistent.

I would love to know how much input each author had to the book. I would also have loved that Coleman's name was just as bit as Delevingne's on the cover, even though she not a supermodel (because really guys, grow up). 

But honestly, I really loved this story.

Toen ik begon met lezen had ik gelijk John Green Vibes en dan vooral Paper Towns. Het verhaal is uiteindelijk wel anders, maar dat was gewoon de eerste connectie die ik maakte. Er zit een mega plottwist in, die je alleen aan zien komen als je alle hints pakt, ik heb dat niet gedaan en dacht dus echt letterlijk what the f! Er zijn andere elementen aan het verhaal die gigantisch voorspelbaar zijn. Red, Leo, Rose, Nai en Ash zijn allemaal karakters die hun eigen diepte en uitwerking hebben. Ik zou wel meer hebben willen geweten over hun achtergronden en hoe en wat. Niet dat er niks over staat, maar het lijken nu elementen die niet veel met de originele plotlijn te maken hebben. Al met al een goed boek, met plottwists die je misschien wel, misschien niet ziet aan komen en vooral what the f.......

All right, all right, all right. I love Cara Delevingne but Mirror Mirror was NOT for me or even what I was expecting. I should have probably listened to the reviews that pointed out certain flaws in the novel before picking it up but I wanted to be able to form my own opinions for obvious reasons. I just... couldn't get into it? It seems like it may have been a "wrong time to read it" moment for me in picking this up, so there may be something in the future that would warrant a second chance for it, but until then? I am going to have to put a pause on this one and set it aside for good. 

That being said, as always: taste is subjective and my personal preference should not be taken as the gospel. If the general synopsis sounds intriguing to you, don't shy away from it and give it a chance!

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters, the use of real language (seriously the appreciation I have of seeing the phrase 'a fuck ton' used knows no bounds) the storyline was gripping and moving and while sometimes the things that happened were a little convenient I thoroughly liked reading it. I got out way more from reading this than I expected in such a good way and I'm hoping to read more from Cara in the future.
