This is a gritty mystery. Kathy Mallory is a rogue New York City detective who will solve a case, doing whatever is necessary. A person is hanging people in trees and letting them die like that. It is similar to a case that happened about 15 years ago. Mallory takes on the case and works to solve it, with the help of her partner Riker, a young material witness, and others. This book bogged down for me in places but overall was a good read.
