That hit a lot harder than I expected. And it's oh so true. 

You see, for me, memories are difficult. Very often, they hurt. A curious thing about grief is the way it takes your entire life, all those foundational years that made you who you are, and makes them so painful to look back upon because of the absence there, that suddenly they’re inaccessible. You must invent an entirely new system.

He tips his chin up to the warm, sticky hometown air, catches his own eye in the rearview mirror. He looks bronzed and soft-mouthed and young, a Texas boy, the same kid he was when he left for DC. So, no more big thoughts for today.

This book was not what I was expecting. It was everything. I was expecting it to be the teenage story of a playboy meeting a conservative sad boy, and it mesh into this unrealistic BL-esque drama sequence. Instead, it was healing, optimistic, and energetic. 2016 was rough in US politics, and this is politics that I want to take center stage now. I hope that people who like an easy-laid back-read pick up this book. (Also no one talks about this but the characters have heart).

i really enjoyed this in the first half and read like 200 pages in one sitting but i felt like it dipped halfway through and it just felt a little repetitive. i wanted more depth and it just felt like one of them would travel across the world so they could have sex and then leave which, slay, but after so many pages of that i got bored.

Oh, god. I can’t even begin. This book was so incredibly well written. I fell in love with the characters and the love between Henry and Alex. It inspired a kind of hope i don’t feel enough and i wish it weren’t over. Absolutely amazing.

The couple are cute and the sexual tension is palpable. There are times where the scenes jump a little too quickly. Other times the sexy times get weighed down in politics. But all in all it was a fun read.

the lack of romantic development in this book makes me uncomfortable. henry and alex meet, they think they hate each other, they quickly find out that they're actually in love, then they have sex multiple times. and that's it. what bothers me here is the feeling that casey mcquiston thinks she's writing a breathtaking love story, when her writing just makes it expository most of the time. yes, they love each other, but i only know this because they keep saying it all the time, not because i can see love in their small actions or because the writing makes me feel their love through words. "you love so much bigger than yourself, bigger than everything" writes alex to henry. but is it true? it's one of the many statements these boys make about specific aspects of their relationship that i don't know if are true or false, simply because there's no romantic development to be found here. ignoring one major choice they make in the book, one that truly shows their feeling's dimensions, there's nothing else. they could easily be just two guys who don't hate each other and enjoy having a lot of sex. their romance is static and boring.

it gets worse when henry and alex exchange these "deep", pseudo-profound e-mails. at the end of each e-mail they always add an excerpt of some letter written by a famous lgbtq+ figure to their lover, such as vita sackville-west or allen ginsberg, and it's a bit embarrassing because i can't help thinking that alex and henry believe they're writing beautiful prose just like these great writers were when they are, most of the time, just declaring their love in a cheesy way. honestly, the writing here is mostly just like that: it's either trying too hard to be funny in a tumblr-ish sort of way or it's trying too hard to be deep and visceral. it's almost as if the author is begging us to compare her forced writing style to some passionate love letters written by extremely talented artists.

also, mcquiston's attempts at making alex and henry look "woke" makes me want to vomit. i do think it's great to write light, wholesome love stories about lgbtq+ people. we all have the right to read something cute and fun, something that doesn't deal with politics at all and that simply ignores the harshness of reality a little bit. but some things are so inherently political — just as, let me say, being an actual PRINCE or an aspiring POLITICIAN — that portraying certain situations in an obviously fake "happy" light just for the sake of being palatable causes more harm than good, and it's also terribly disrespectful toward people who actually suffer from these real life issues. you can pretend high schools aren't full of homophobes and just write a happy, optimistic love story between two gay students. you can't pretend that the actual prince of england referencing star wars in an attempt to look morally decent in an anti-imperialist way isn't, at best, a bad taste joke.

This story was incredibly and surprisingly tender. I truly felt that both Alex and Henry were very relatable for their own reasons. And I found their love story to be so rewarding and deserved at the end. 

I haven’t read anything else by this author yet, but if you have, what is your favorite and why?

           Não poderia ter começado meu ano de maneira melhor. O hype desse livro no ano passado estava (e ainda está enorme), o que ao mesmo tempo me deixou com pé atrás e também me impulsionou na leitura, e descobri que ele merece cada pedacinho do hype que tem. 
A começar pelos personagens que são absolutamente perfeitos. Me apaixonei fortemente pelo Alex e pelo Henry, torci por eles como não torcia por um casal há muito tempo. Nora e June também me deixaram apaixonada, além de Bea, Ellen e todas as personagens mulheres incríveis desse livro. Eu me identifiquei muito pela personalidade de Henry e fiquei tão feliz por ele ter encontrado alguém que o ama como ele merece.
A trama é maravilhosa. Em nenhum momento ela seguiu o caminho que eu esperava, o primeiro beijo veio do nada, a briga que eu achei que teria não rolou e o problemão que acontece mais pro final eu nunca imaginei também. Apesar de partir de uma ideia clichê (que eu amo rs) de enemies to lovers, Casey a utiliza de uma maneira surpreendente e muito natural e saudável. Henry e Alex são o casal que todo mundo quer ter em sua vida.
Mas eu acho que o que conquistou de vez as 5 estrelas e p favorito nesse livro foi a política. Me surpreendi ao ver o como isso foi bem colocado na história, sem parecer forçado ou chato. O final do livro me fez chorar, me fez querer desesperadamente que esse universo fosse o nosso. Que a presidenta Claremont existisse e nada disso que está acontecendo fosse verdade. E eu acho que essa foi a intenção da autora, nos dar um pouquinho de esperança ao saber que existem pessoas como nós ao redor do mundo, que querem o bem e estão na luta. E que um dia nós vamos colocar uma delas no poder, no Brasil, nos EUA e onde mais puder. 
Vou sentir falta de Henry e Alex mas acredito que a história deles está fechada. Talvez a autora pudesse escrever um conto pra gente matar a saudade ou introduzir seus outros livros nesse universo pra gente ver como vai a vida dos dois pelo menos um pouquinho.
Esse livro merece virar filme urgentemente.

definitely one of my all-time favorite books i've read!!

alex (first son) and henry (prince of wales) are the perfect couple to fulfill the ever-so-lovely enemies-to-lovers trope. the banter was great, the relationship development was paced really well, and i personally loved how we got to see the circumstances and events surrounding both of their lives (in addition to the romance) as well. obviously, the setting creates a *slightly* unrealistic political landscape, but as it does act as more of a subplot and the entire premise of the book is just kind of silly like that, it's totally fine.

overall, it was fantastic, casey has never let me down, and i would 100% recommend anything and everything by them, especially RWRB! :)

So here’s the thing:

Was this book perfect? No. Did it have a plot? A very teeny tiny one. It definitely forgot the plot half way through, as well as the direction of where the story was going. Did I care? Not a BIT.
These characters were some of the loveliest characters I’ve ever read. The love I have for Henry and Alex, as well as June and Nora and Bea is insurmountable. Yes, the ending was too perfect. I didn’t care. This isn’t a history book on the royal family or an exposé on how to turn Texas into a democratic state. It was about LOVE and choosing someone that fits you and understands you. It was so lovely and hopeful and so so heartfelt. I loved this book and I can’t wait to revisit it always.

enjoyed this read a lot more than i expected!! a lot of the politics talk went over my head but that didnt stop me from rooting for alex and henry the entire time:)

Alright, this book was pure comfort and I'm here for it. I wasn't bored once, I loved the characters and I felt so so comfy throughout reading this. Is it a literary masterpiece? Probably not, but I enjoyed the read tremendously.
