2 of these stars go to the hard sci-fi technology in this book, I thought the inversion concept was super creative and cool. I liked the idea of empaths who were also super tough, bada** fighters. The overarching plot and world-building of this book is also pretty intriguing. That being said, this book is not well written at all, the romance was, uh, weird. I felt it could have done with a lot more editing and just better writing in general. It got better towards the 60% mark though, when it became clear that our narrator was sometimes unreliable. I would have loved a version of this book with better writing, better character development... and less creepy romance scenes. Are all of the author's books written like this? If so, not sure if I'll be reading more, despite the intriguing sci-fi concepts
