The Unhoneymooners

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews * Publishers Weekly * Library Journal Named a “Must-Read” by TODAY, Us Weekly, Bustle, BuzzFeed, Goodreads, Entertainment Weekly, Publishers Weekly, Southern Living, Book Riot, Woman’s Day, The Toronto Star, and more! For two sworn enemies, anything can happen during the Hawaiian trip of a lifetime—maybe even love—in this romantic comedy from the New York Times bestselling authors of Roomies. Olive Torres is used to being the unlucky twin: from inexplicable mishaps to a recent layoff, her life seems to be almost comically jinxed. By contrast, her sister Ami is an eternal champion...she even managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a slew of contests. Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend the wedding day with the best man (and her nemesis), Ethan Thomas. Olive braces herself for wedding hell, determined to put on a brave face, but when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. Suddenly there’s a free honeymoon up for grabs, and Olive will be damned if Ethan gets to enjoy paradise solo. Agreeing to a temporary truce, the pair head for Maui. After all, ten days of bliss is worth having to assume the role of loving newlyweds, right? But the weird thing is...Olive doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, the more she pretends to be the luckiest woman alive, the more it feels like she might be. With Christina Lauren’s “uniquely hilarious and touching voice” (Entertainment Weekly), The Unhoneymooners is a romance for anyone who has ever felt unlucky in love.

jesus h christ. the entire book is everyone gaslighting this girl, calling her “moody” and “pessimistic” for (validly) not kissing the ground her brother in law walks on?? im genuinely .. lost. like her reasons make sense and anyone with critical thinking skills would also agree with me?? what the hell was the subplot about her career and corporate world??? spoiler alert: no one loves their job. the dream is to find a job they can do and that they tolerate that will pay for a life they want to live. this was bad. like really bad.

It was cute enough and I’m not upset that I read it haha. Ethan does end up being a dick, and I found it frustrating the way he treated Olive. At the same time tho if I was in his position maybe I would also want to trust my brother first? Anytime they fought though I found him to be really unreasonable. Which kind of ruins the second book because they get married 😂

They had good banter, like it really was a nice enemies to lovers included things like miscommunication etc. However, I personally think the book for really agitating in later chapters especially after the honeymoon because jesus fucking Christ. I'm sorry but Ethan was totally unhinged and was a total ass to Olive and I don't think his reaction should be normalized like it is at all, yeah he apologised but it still feels so iffy like I get he's your brother but the things he AND ami said to olive when she went to them, hurt about something is insane. Olive deserves better, but at least they got a good ending at the end.

This was such a fun cute book. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I ended up liking it. I totally want to go re-read it again right now. It's just so fun.

As far as these types of books go pretty par for the course but I would say a little below average. It's simple and digestible. The banter between Ethan and Olive was cute. I felt like the book was better at portraying how in love Ethan was than it was with Olive even though everything but the epilogue is in her POV. A few things that annoyed me and took this book from possibly four stars to 3: 1)it is weird for an identical twin to date the brother of her twin sister's husband. period. 2) Olive and the book are a tinge fatphobic. She talks about her weight a lot and she is pretty ashamed. While I could excuse this as a part of her character since characters need flaws the book really subtly doubles down on the fatphobia by causing Olive to lose weight as soon as her life starts improving a pretty common narrative fatphobic hack. Not my fave. 3) what are the chances you see 2 people you know in a random resort in Hawaii. 4) she really didn't need to lie to her boss. yes in the moment it made sense but she could've just followed up and explained the situation at dinner without just tricking him. It what world does it make sense to tell your boss you're married when you're not. there was no exit strategy. I feel like the avg person wold understand not letting a trip go to waste but lying about being married is weird. 5) while lying about being married is weird being fired for it is even weirder. Also he specifically notes that she signed a morality clause BUT in the book she signs the paper work after the trip technically she wasn't even hired yet or at least contractual liable until after she returned. I think she could've sued him lol or at least negotiated being able to stay based off of that. 6) i don't like that Ethan and Amy use Olive's supposed negative outlook to dismiss her accusations. She may be negative but she doesn't need to lie. The least either of them could've done is take it seriously and not gaslight her. Ethan stepped wayyyy out of line saying she was just jealous of her sister and honestly didn't grovel enough for that IMO. Overall pretty cute. Good audiobook listen. Def not my fave romance tho.

I don’t usually give 5 stars to books in this genre. The reason being is because they are more of a fast read for me and don’t provoke any deep emotions while reading. But this book.. was a roller coaster of emotions. I laughed, cried, giggled like a school girl, etc. It was the perfect pace and I absolutely fell in love with the characters. It felt like I was watching a romantic comedy movie while reading; it was just so perfect. I honestly hope that this book is made into a movie someday. It deserves the recognition and for more people to be engulfed in the story that is The Unhoneymooners.

Maybe 3.5 stars? Still undecided, I think because I just finished The Paradise Problem recently and this feels sort of similar but with less chemistry.

Possible spoilers below...

I can get behind the initial mix up that led Olive to believe Ethan hated her, but I feel like throughout the book he does odd things that feel out of character for him? For example, almost gloating to his ex but not paying attention to Olive at lunch and then having no idea why she's upset. He's smart and aware enough to not even create that situation in the first place. His blinders for his imbecile brother's repeated garbage behavior are also frustrating, because again, he's smart enough to realize what was really going on, and that Olive was right. I didn't love that he immediately jumped to her being outright wrong without even looking into it.

I did enjoy most of the book, but parts of it felt incredibly odd to me.

Honestly this was such a fun read. Give me enemies to lovers (with a bit of fake dating) any day of the week, I'll eat that s**t up. The banter and the pop-culture references here and there were great. So was the character devolpment, especially Olive's. I seem to only be reading romance novels this year lol and I mean there is no shame in that AT ALL but yeah, I just don't have the mental capacity for anything else atm.

2.75 - i liked olive and i enjoyed her’s and ethan’s banter they were cute and i’m a sucker for the fake dating trope - but i was very frustrated with how thick and clueless ethan was at times (i mean i do understand his position but still, it was a bit tiring to see him going in circles like that) - i kinda wish the final conflict and the ending overall before the epilogue would’ve stretched for a bit longer, it felt a bit rushed to me, and despite all that went down kind of anticlimactic, although i am to some extent satisfied with how everything came together - i loved the torres family so much honestly i wanted more of them - also how cute is this cover!!

This book was disappointing from the very first chapter, but I had to read it anyways.

The characters were bland, the plot wasn’t that good and I felt like the only thing that made the main characters like each other was sex. And ugh, don’t let me start on that stupid apology. Ethan and Ami both said some very mean things to Olive and I felt like the writer totally acted like it wasn’t a big deal and that a simple “sorry” would fix everything.

The only good thing I can say about this book is that it’s easy to read and would probably be more enjoyable if you’re on vacation yourself.

I loved it so much!! The pacing of the story, the banters, the story, the characters were (almost) perfect. It's such a cute light and fun read. The chemistry Olive and Ethan has was one of the best I have read in a while. It didn't feel forced at all; it felt so fresh and it's so fun to read. It's probably going to be one of my comfort books because it made me feel SOO happy and giddy, but at the same time, it made me so upset and sad. I hated the last chapter, but I love the epilogue, ITS SO CUTE.
