I was very excited to read this book as I have heard so many good things about it and absolutely love the Cotswolds. I enjoyed the first three quarters of it thoroughly and found Lee’s descriptions and the imagery he creates beautiful. But I have to say the entire thing was ruined for me when he described in the penultimate chapter a plan he makes with his school friends to ambush and gang rape a potentially disabled/venerable classmate! I was so disturbed by this and by the way he almost looks back at this as a fond memory or like it is come kind of childish fancy. He does not indicate any remorse felt or any immorality around the subject. I will not be reading anything else by Laurie Lee as I was really disgusted by this.
