Small Pleasures A Novel
Reviews

Initially the mystery/investigative element interested me but the longer it went on the less grasp the author seemed to have on the narrative and the characters (especially the minor ones) were lazily stereotyped. Supremely disappointing.

I was originally going to give the book 3 stars, but the ending completely ruined the novel for me. I now understand why other people’s reviews fixated on ‘the ending’ and how it had let them down. 2 stars.

Loved this for spotlighting characters as vivacious and vivid as younger people are often centered and rendered in lit. Admittedly though, the stakes felt less compelling than the concept of these people negotiating not later life, but after well after 30s and 40s and their parents’ issues. Had the prose been a bit more to my preference I think this would have easily been a 4 star read, but still worth a read despite being a fulfillment of a promise and nothing more (to me).

honestly... I feel like I've been queer baited into reading this book ngl
The story takes ages to develop and is really focusing on highlighting the "small pleasures" of a rather boring/unhappy life. Apart from those quite repetitive moments (like smoking a cigarette) there wasn't much happening except for some events that felt a little forced in oder to get the story going. The overall reading experience felt rocky and slow - the last 50 to 75 pages were the only exception - I did quite enjoy reading those.

Good character arcs, did not expect the ending. Loved the build up throughout. Good plot line that touches on many different topics.
