Shakespeare's retelling of the Roman legend of G. Marcius Coriolanus, a renegade Roman general. The monologue made by the general's mother near the play's end is particularly moving.

Volumnia is one of Shakespeare's best characters.

Coriolanus is one of the lesser known plays but in my opinion it is very underrated. It's dark, it's raw and so, so different to his other works. I really enjoyed the way the play itself, through its' tone, reflects the nature of the man Coriolanus, or Caius Marcius, and his tragedy. He is torn between two versions of himself, always pushed further by his ambitious mother and at the same time a man who simply wants to fulfill his duty and be left alone. The intimate scenes between Coriolanus and his enemy are one of a kind.

One of the lesser known of Shakespeare's works, Coriolanus offers insight into the concept of nobility, how this is often related to battle, and the nature of divisions between distinct social classes in Ancient Rome.
