The Zookeeper's Wife A Look at the War Behind the Story

The Zookeeper's Wife A Look at the War Behind the Story Book Preview: Jan Zabinski was the director of the Warsaw Zoo in the 1930's. He worked together with his wife Antonina who had a remarkable love towards the animals. They had a villa in the zoo which contained a nursery and was a home for a big number of animals. The couple had a son that lived there too. This life that they built for themselves came to an end with the start of the German invasion on September the 1st 1939. Nearly all of the animals that were living in the Zoo were killed by the bombings and their cages were also destroyed. The Zoo was under German occupation but the family still lived in the villa and had a pig farm. Antonina and her husband were the zookeepers in this Zoo which was one of the biggest and most prolific zoos in Europe in that period. In September 1939, Antonina opened the gates of the Zoo and along with the crowd that waited to see the animals, Miejski Ogrod Zoologiczny entered the Zoo.
