Crossed

Garth Ennis2006
The world's been overrun by sadistic homicidal maniacs. A small band of survivors crosses what's left of America, in constant danger and trying to hold onto what little humanity they can. In the blink of an eye, humanity is lost, and the Crossed are upon us. Men, women, and children alike fall victim to the mystery infection that makes killers out of parents and rapists out of lovers. Ruthless, berserk, and evil beyond measure, these cackling demons spread their plague across the Earth, brining humanity to near-extinction. Now, a small band of survivors make their cautious way across a deserted America, existing in a state of constant terror. The only thing they have in common is their determination to survive... but in this frightening new world, survival has a cost all its own. How far will they go to stay alive, and can they do so without become monsters themselves?

This story did a good job at introducing the reader to a worst-case scenario brutal apocalypse and set the awful tone for the series. I advise anyone who has an aversion to things like graphic sexual assault scenes, child torture and death, and heavy gore to avoid this series all together. The art style is unique and the gore is shocking and inventive. There were certain parts that felt like the author was trying to depict the most disgusting and depraved things that he could possibly think of, and I did find myself surprised at how far this story was willing to go. I think this first volume did a good job at introducing certain characters and more importantly, introducing the reader to this dark, twisted world. I will continue reading as I’m curious where it could possibly go from here depravity-wise and how it could possibly end story-wise. I recommend this story for fans of survival horror and extreme shock horror.
