I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to rate this. 70% into the book I would’ve given it a 3 star rating. It was just a story that seemingly wasn’t going anywhere that I could see. Just a bunch of horrible characters doing shady things. Then BOOM the ending just smacks you in the face with a million things all at once and I was just sitting there like 🤯🤯🤯 the ending was over the top crazy, but I loved that. It just took almost the entire book to get there. I’m the end I decided the ending in itself deserved a whole star so 4 stars is where I’m settling for now. I’m still not totally set on it though because about halfway through I wanted to give up, which doesn’t scream 4 stars to me. It’s not even a big deal so I need to calm down! 🤪 4/5 what a wild ending

           2.5 - Reason being, it was super slow in the beginning and didn’t get entertaining until literally the last few chapters when it became a completely different story, at least that’s what it felt like. I really enjoyed how it came together in the end and Parts 3-4 were by far the most entertaining I just wish it hadn’t taken forever to get there. 

Here’s the spoiler - I thought it was Julian, the party planner!! I feel like he also had so much to gain by killing William and avenging Eleanor because William was the reason Lyle, Julian’s love, left for war and died there!!! And this was the only time Julian was ever back in the house and he was coordinating the party so he had access to the kitchen it just made perfect sense. I was so sure of it too and I would’ve been really happy with that ending but it got too voodoo too fast (I love the craft) when it turned out to be Elizabeth but there was barely any built up. And what was the point of the ghost boy? I feel like that was so drawn out and gave no reason at the end. The craziest turn was Marcie all of sudden being a sociopath but there was never any foresight about that whole trailer park situation until like the last 4 chapters. It felt like too many ideas and stories that were trying to come together in some way. Nonetheless entertaining but did not have my on the edge of my seat.

This book was, well, interesting I guess is the best word I can think of. I'm only giving it 3 stars because I love Sarah Pinborough's writing style and how easy it is for me to read. I never get bored reading her works and I feel that it's fairly quick for me to read.

However, this book, UGH. I wanted to love this book so much more after reading Behind Her Eyes which has one of the best plot twists of all time in my opinion. As a general rule for myself, I never read a thriller's synopsis before reading the book and this book immediately drew me in from the beginning. I was loving the characters and the slow storyline that kept me constantly guessing when there was going to be a big plot twist. And then I got to the end of the book and I was honestly confused, I felt like I was just hit over the head with a large book and had temporarily lost all coherent thoughts. I will give it kudos though because if that was meant as a huge reveal and plot twist at the end, I will give the author props because I DEFINITELY did not see that coming.

Other than the bizarre ending, I do like how the ending wasn't rushed like some thrillers are. The whole book itself was slow in pace (but not in a bad way) so I'm happy that it was somewhat drawn out (again, not in a bad way). I didn't love the characters in the same way I did in the beginning but that's okay because I understand how it was all integrated into the story.

I still plan on reading other Sarah Pinbourough books because I really do enjoy her writing style. I'm just hopeful that the next one I read doesn't have such a bizarre ending

DEAD TO HER is a slow burn of a page turner. A build up that took the better part of the book, followed by a race to see how fast I could turn the pages to find out who and why and what exactly all that voodoo magic was all about. Dead to Her takes place in Savannah Georgia among the wealthy country club "set". Both couples are wealthy husbands with second wives, all with their own secrets and regrets. Rather steamy at times, this thriller pulled it all together in the end with a resolution I certainly didn't see coming! And that last line! I recommend this thriller to anyone who enjoys a slow build up of anxiety and tension in a thriller, who enjoys a little steamy romance mixed in and an ending that you won't see coming.
