Danach beriet er den Online-Händler Zappos, dessen CEO er bald wurde und noch heute ist. Das Unternehmen, welches unter anderem vom Fortune Magazine zur „Best Company to Work For“ gewählt wurde, wurde später mit einem Jahresumsatz von mehr als einer Milliarde USD an Amazon verkauft.

A friend recommended this book to me, and I dived right into it right away mainly for the author's life similarities to mine: Quincy Grille, immigrants. I was sad to found out that he passed away in a tragic accident late last year. I'm 12 years late to this book so a lot of the book's focus on customer happiness and culture sounded for granted to me but when I contextualize it to pre-2009, it was groundbreaking. No one liked customer service back then.

I was really impressed with Tony Hsieh's entrepreneurial spirit since his childhood. I LOLed at his descriptions at being a rave boy. I read a lot of articles that said he treated his friends with rare grand generosity. He truly lived to his values of delivering happiness. His storytelling of how he quit Oracle after 6 months to do a start-up (not knowing what yet) was inspiring in its conviction to me.

I think the book could have been improved in some structural things (I got really tired of listening his copy-and-paste emails and a random narrator coming in after the 5th one), and I don't think I learned anything new here but it was cool to get inside the head and thoughts of someone who made a big difference in an industry.

There's a lot of speculation about why and how he passed. We don't know for sure anything, but I think Tony's drive and visions really shine through in this book.

This book inspired me so much so that I haven't gone to work a single day since I finished it. That, I would say, was happiness delivered.

The beginnings of Tony Hsieh was not that intriguing for me but the background of Zappos was very informative. Well worth a read for anyone in the customer service market.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Delivering Happiness" and would recommend it to anyone interested in entrepreneurship, the weird world of the tech industry, or in building a better culture at work.

However, the story, that really struck me, was a personal one:

Tony sold his first company “Link Exchange” to Microsoft in 1998; his share of the deal was in the region of $40m. One of the conditions was that he would stay with Microsoft for extra twelve months in order to be eligible for the full sum. If he left before that, he stood to lose 20% of it (about $8m in this case).

And by “staying” it meant that he wouldn’t have had to do much more than show up to the office and just give the impression he was being productive. Not a terrible arrangement, right? Well, not according to Tony...
