Dial A for Aunties

"Sutanto brilliantly infuses comedy and culture into the unpredictable rom-com/murder mystery mashup as Meddy navigates familial duty, possible arrest and a groomzilla. I laughed out loud and you will too."--USA Today (four-star review) "A hilarious, heartfelt romp of a novel about--what else?--accidental murder and the bond of family. This book had me laughing aloud within its first five pages... Utterly clever, deeply funny, and altogether charming, this book is sure to be one of the best of the year!"--Emily Henry, New York Times bestselling author of Beach Read One of PopSugar's "42 Books Everyone Will Be Talking About in 2021"! What happens when you mix 1 (accidental) murder with 2 thousand wedding guests, and then toss in a possible curse on 3 generations of an immigrant Chinese-Indonesian family? You get 4 meddling Asian aunties coming to the rescue! When Meddelin Chan ends up accidentally killing her blind date, her meddlesome mother calls for her even more meddlesome aunties to help get rid of the body. Unfortunately, a dead body proves to be a lot more challenging to dispose of than one might anticipate, especially when it is inadvertently shipped in a cake cooler to the over-the-top billionaire wedding Meddy, her Ma, and aunties are working at an island resort on the California coastline. It's the biggest job yet for the family wedding business--"Don't leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans!"--and nothing, not even an unsavory corpse, will get in the way of her auntie's perfect buttercream flowers. But things go from inconvenient to downright torturous when Meddy's great college love--and biggest heartbreak--makes a surprise appearance amid the wedding chaos. Is it possible to escape murder charges, charm her ex back into her life, and pull off a stunning wedding all in one weekend?

3.5 stars! Ooh this was refreshing! Quick and easy romance-thriller read that got you hooked. Although I wouldn't say I liked Meddelin, the family dynamic between Meddelin and her aunties are so fun to see, the bicker and the overall chaoticness makes me missing my own lol. As for the main characters, Meddelin to me was too impetuous and didn't read like a 26 years old women at all, I think if she's described as a..... 17 years old? It would've make more sense. And Nathan.. does he even have any flaw at all?

This book was good! It's such a nice light feel-good comedy book, but I got so lost along the way with everything that was happening. I think I would have enjoyed it more as a film or series (It would be like Crazy Rich Asians but with a twist). It was absurd, but I think this book doesn't really rely on realistic events anyway.

Okay this book has the most ridiculous plot and I love it. It is hilarious and sappy and wonderful all at the same time. So. Much. Fun.

Besides the several incidents that didn't make sense, this story was quite interesting and enjoyable (and funny ofc), I didn’t expect the story will be so focused on the romance bcs I thought this book will be about family, but that's okay because there were still meaningful messages abt the aunties 😌

3.5 stars. I love how rich the culture descriptions are. The details, the morbid humor (the part I love the most TBH), the sibling rivalry and the meddling aunts....I love it. I just feel like the ending is a little bit rushed for that many conflict that is going on in the story, twist after twist. Also (view spoiler)[ not sure how to feels about queerness being used as a twist to a story...it ended good but still (hide spoiler)]

This was such a fun read and I loved how it just keeps getting better. The four chaotic, insufferable, loud aunties are so cute!! I love the perfect depiction of the thin line between familial love and toxicity in a usual Asian household. The tight bond and the chemistry between them was unmatched! If you want a light read after reading a mystery/thriller book, this one is perfect for you. Also, I am so excited for the Netflix adaptation. (contains a little spoiler) The little wlw representation was the cherry on top of this book, (especially when you didn't expect it) luv Jackie and Maureen sm! They were such great characters and so perfect for each other, it made my little gay heart very happy.

★★★☆☆ (3.5) “Meddy, how can you say that? Your aunties coming over, so late at night, coming to help us get rid of body, and we don’t even offer them any food? How can? Oh, we have dragon fruit, good, good.” esperaba morirme de la risa. no pasó, pero fue divertido, 20/10 a las tías porque se lanzaban unos comentarios buenísimos.

This was such a fun listen! The culture and tradition wrapped throughout the light hearted comedy was a perfect touch. The characters really come to life and you can see the whole situation unfold. No spice but tons of giggles! Audiobook was great!

I honestly didn’t think I was going to enjoy this book but ended up loving it! It had me actually laughing and gasping out loud. I fell in love with the family dynamic and each characters personality. There were so many twists in the book that had you hanging onto the next page. A perfect mix of drama, romance and comedy

Part comedy, part drama, part romance. The last 15% made the difference between a 3 star and 4 star rating. The comedy of errors swerved too far into secondhand embarrassment cringe for my personal preference. That said, the representation of Chinese-Indonesian families and filial loyalty, honor, etc was both lovely and a learning experience.
