The remoter parts of the English Fens are forlorn, lost and damp even in the height of summer. At Iyot Lock, a large decaying house, two young cousins, Leonora and Edward, are parked for the summer with their ageing spinster aunt and her cruel housekeeper. At first the unpleasantness and petty meannesses appear simply spiteful, calculated to destroy Edward's equanimity. But when spoilt Leonora is not given the birthday present of a specific dolly that she wants, affairs inexorably take a much darker turn with terrifying, life-destroying consequences for everyone.

Horrifying. The book is drenched with an air of foreboding, and a sense of unease. It is taut-ly written and conjures up gothic imagery. Could have been longer though.

The story spans several decades of a family, picking up as young cousins Edward and Leonora meet for the first time when they go to spend the summer with their Aunt Kestrel. There's an uneasy feeling in the house, not really helped by the behaviour of the spoiled Leonora who likes to get her own way. 

Susan Hill manages to inject chilling atmosphere into the most seemingly innocuous things and keeps you reading right to the end. A short but sinister tale.

wait, what?! But why?! How?! I still have questions! was it because of Lenora?! Did she do something to the Indian bride doll? Why? Who? I feel like I missed something... but still, the book is very nice, I liked the writing.

It's a good read at the beginning but I'm afraid the ending left me confused... it's like you've been waiting for the answer to a question from the very beginning and was left with more questions. It's a pretty fast read, not as creepy as I wanted it to be and
