Dorothy Whipple is seriously becoming one of my favourite authors – ever. After reading The Priory last year, I was looking forward to reading They Were Sisters – and it did not disappoint. It's taken me a while to finish it, as I combine fiction with non-fiction reading, but oh my, by the third chunk of the novel I was hooked and reading nothing else. What I admire the most about her books is how she writes her characters. You learn to love each and every one of them – except maybe Geoffrey –, despite their mistakes, despite their decisions and actions, because they are all so humanly flawed and beautiful. Read it. Just read it.

The end of this book nearly made me cry, as annoyingly perfect Lucy was, I couldn’t help love her character and her relationship with William. Hard to read in places but a lovely message of motherhood.
