Dr. Strange Beard A Small Town Romantic Comedy
Reviews

3 stars for roscoesimone and another star for shelly playing with her jethrosienna’s eldest kid

For some reason, this one took me a little longer to get into. I am not sure, why but I wasn't conencting with either Roscoe or Simone, maybe too pragmatic for me. But as the story progressed and everything with the gang started developing I became more and more into it. I felt very defensive about the younger Winston, it shocked me a little, when Danielle was saying all those things about him and it annoyed me LOL. Simone was awesome and such a badass and her inner dialogue was funny with how she was rejecting feelings. Although her falling in love with Roscoe, was the first time I felt came a bit out of left field. But it was so lovely to see once she embraced it, her love for him was just so intense. I am sad, that it feels I am saying goodbye to the Winstons even though I still ahve one more book to go lol. Still I really enjoyed it as alaways :)

Roscoe and Simone gave me all the freaking feels and I couldn't stop reading once I started. I'm not sure how it's possible for the Winston Brothers series to get better and better with each new book, but that's exactly what's happening. This one just might be my favorite so far, even if I don't want to play favorites between my beautiful Winston boys. (And, naturally, their amazing ladies.) I'm convinced no one writes multi-faceted and unique, yet still totally relatable, characters quite the way Penny does. I absolutely loved both Roscoe and Simone. The hot, bearded vet who just happened to be a virgin and his childhood best friend — who rejected him all those years ago, thus ending their friendship — face-to-face again? Oh, and did I mention she's an FBI agent who is trying to take down his POS father and he has no idea? That's a whole lot of Kim catnip right there. I was all over it. Simone and Roscoe were so evenly matched and it was obvious to me — and anyone who was paying attention — they belonged together. History be damned. Not only does Penny deliver an amazing friends-to-enemies-to-lovers-slash-second-chance-ish romance with Dr. Strange Beard, she give us a book that is relevant to our times. I'm not going to dig too far down into things, but there's one scene that absolutely stood out to me. That's when Simone, an FBI agent herself, is dealing with a (*cough* racist *cough*) local cop and Ashley intervenes. It was a very thought-provoking scene. I love reading romance for, well the romance, but I like when I take a little more away from it, too. She definitely gave me something to think about here. I can emphatically say I love the Winstons. I've enjoyed watching these guys pair off so very much. I love how each book gives us a look at the previous couples and works towards the overall story with Darrell, Razor and the rest of the MC. It's heading towards a huge climax and I can't wait for the rest of the pieces to fall together. Of course, all that's just a bonus to the wonderful, swoony and sexy as hell romances. I can always count on Penny to deliver the feels and Dr. Strange Beard was no exception. I received a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. FAVORITE QUOTES Fierce wasn't my thing. I preferred my guys quiet, thoughtful, and reflective, slow to anger and quick to theorizing. "And if you fall for the wrong person, what can you do? You're already in love, and your heart wants what it wants, and everything is a mess." Stars, flowers, hearts, puppies, fireworks, Roscoe. I was drunk, liquid heat in his arms, his embrace, his strong hands reforming me, twisting my insides until I was sure I would dissolve, an amorphous puddle of feeling. "Relax. It's just me." "You'll never be just anything." I'd learned that—in love— nothing makes sense. I didn't make sense. I didn't understand myself. Down is up and up is purple. The sky is drawer. The moon is goat. In love, everything was nonsense.

Originally posted at Booklovers For Life With each new Winston Brother book, I fall more in love with this fascinating cast of characters Penny Reid has created. This latest installment is about the youngest of the Winston boys, Roscoe. He's a vet, basically has photographic memory (he can remember memories/events word for word), and... has always been in unrequited love with his childhood friend. But Dr. Strange Beard is so much more than childhood friends reconnecting – it also features racial issues that are so prevalent in today's world. Though this isn't my favorite Winston Brother novel, I loved Roscoe and Simone, and highly recommend their story if you want to read something different. There is no one. There's never been anyone. There's only been you. Ten years after Roscoe cut all ties and communication with his best friend Simone, she's back in town, and as much as he tries to avoid her, he can't. Simone makes it her mission to get close to Roscoe again, but not for the reason you'd think. She's never stopped wondering why Roscoe dropped her a decade before and is determined to find out. But as she learns how kind-hearted, protective, sensitive, and not to mention gorgeous he is, she can't help but fall for him. Loving Roscoe wasn't a hunch, or a hypothesis, or a theory. I loved Roscoe, and that was a law. Roscoe and Simone were a breath of fresh air for me. We have a sensitive hero who loves the heroine with all his heart and a headstrong heroine who thinks that love is not for her. I loved how these two learn to be vulnerable with each other. They learn to tackle issues together, lean on each other, and grow in a beautiful way that wasn't possible when they were apart. And I am so impressed with the way the author chose to portray racism and Simone's struggles throughout the book. It was honest and real, and having sensitivity readers for this aspect of the book certainly helped. “You are in my heart. You have shaped my soul. Nothing–nothing–will change that for me.” I can never get enough of Penny Reid's characters. Each one is so utterly unique and amazing in his/her own way, and Simone and Roscoe were no different! If you like Penny’s books, this one’s a must read. Now I'm eagerly awaiting the next and final Winston Brothers book, which I feel will end up being my favorite (BILLY!!!).
