A devastating story that focuses on the themes of drugs, crime, and hopelessness. I did not see the twist coming. The story and art was very impressive. If you're a fan of noir and crime stories, read this one.

A new classic in the oeuvre of Brubaker and Phillips, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies is a heartbreaking exploration of teenage love, drug addiction, and the lengths people will go to to escape their pasts... or stay in them forever. This book does link in with the Criminal series, and as such doesn't PERFECTLY stand alone as promised, but regardless of this connection the book is a must-read graphic novel and one of the very best of 2018.
