Not going to lie, I enjoy Edgar Rice Burroughs way more than I should. A lot of what the man wrote does not age well and can be, well, some of the most offensive stuff I’ve seen in classics so far that I can recall.

That unfortunate state of affairs aside, his prose just really works for me. His style is addictive and outlandish and I just really dig it and pulp in general.

It was especially interesting to see how little I knew of Burroughs’ actual Tarzan compared to the caricature in broader culture (which is ironic as Burroughs’ Tarzan can be argued to be a caricature of uninhibited masculinity and the so-called super-man.)

There’s humor in good taste, humor in bad taste and faulty science, as well as bad taste in general… But I rather enjoyed it and was pleasantly surprised by the plot.
