Morning Glories was an accidental find in a used book store that ended up sparking an obsession. If you look at the covers of the series, it seems as if the books might be another anime-inspired harem collection with sexy girls in school girl outfits. However, while I will not deny that there questionable illustration framing choices at times, Morning Glories is a very strange, but fascinating thriller about a group of teenagers being trained to save the world. Or perhaps destroy it. No one is quite sure yet. At the start of volume one, our six main characters are all accepted to one of the most prestigious prep schools in the US, but once they arrive, they quickly realise that their new school is trying to kill them. Or at least torment and possibly maim them. It's complicated and possibly for the greater good. Whatever that means! The characters also have some strange powers, time travel is a thing that happens regularly, and there are mysteries seeped in intrigue seeped in backstabbing. If you are a fan of stories that you need to reread and think through to figure out (and ones that don't like giving up answers easily), Morning Glories is an intense experience that has been going strong for eight volumes (and will last at least eight more!).

There are a whole lot of questions introduced and not a whole lot of answers. I get it's a first volume, but you've gotta give me SOMETHING to keep me reading. If one part of the mystery had been solved, or even explained a little, I might have given volume 2 a try, but honestly not worth my time. The art style is really cool though, and if you do like mysterious, more question than answer type stories, you might like this series. It just isn't for me.

It's beautifully drawn but the story is just a little low in info for me to make me want to keep going. I don't care enough about any of the characters to keep reading.

I just started reading this series, on the advice of my daughter. ("Read this READ THIS NOW" she commanded, pressing a stack of the graphic novels into my hands) I knew nothing about Morning Glories going in.

What a riot! This volume starts a story about a half-dozen students at an elite prep school. Except that the school is secretive, frequently homicidal, manipulative, and possible involved in world- and century-spanning conspiracies. The six protagonists are gifted, unusually so, perhaps in unnatural ways.

The plot leaps from subplot to subplot, racing back Lost-style to carve out some character backgrounds, then throwing challenges at characters in the present. There is an enormous amount of mystery here, with few explanations.

I like the way Morning Glories plays with the high school story genre. It picks up many cliched features (cheerleading, bullies, sexy teachers, abusive teachers) and ramps some of them up, while twisting others. It's like Heathers reimagined by Takashi Miike. 

The only downsides are that the art is too homogeneous. I have a hard time telling some characters apart.

On to the next one.
