Toulouse-Lautrec The Formative Years, 1878-1891

Despite his popularity with the public and extensive literature surrounding his life, Toulouse-Lautrec's art has rarely been subjected to intensive investigation by art historians. This book is the first modern attempt to examine the formation of the characteristic features of the artist's style and subject matter. It bases an analysis of his early evolution (up through the appearance of his first poster) on a revised chronology and an investigation of the relation of his work to its artistic, intellectual, and social context.
