Getting Schooled

Getting Schooled

Emma Chase2018
Head of the class... Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out. The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and "cool" teacher in the hometown where he's not just a golden boy — he's platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle. Then...Callie Carpenter comes home. And knocks him right on his tight end zone. Back to school... Callie has a pretty sweet life herself...on the other side of the country. But circumstances — that she'd prefer to never speak of again — have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school. Now she's facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore...and that's just the teachers. Just like old times... When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance - and then has to stop herself from jumping him. Good friends are all they can ever be. Or...these teachers just might end up getting schooled — by love.

I don't normally read romance and this book is exactly the reason. It focuses so much on the physical attraction between the two main characters that you never really get the deep connection they apprently have. It has about as much depth as a puddle. How many times did I have to read the words "perfect bouncing t!ts". TOO many times!! The 2* are for Snoopy and the occasional funny line Garrett delivered. This author will be a hard pass for me in the future.

This review was originally posted on Addicted To Romance Getting Schooled is the first book in Emma Chase's new series, this is a small town romance with a high school setting with our hero and heroine both teachers. So this is NO teacher student romance, this features mature adults who have some solid life experience on their backs. I put this book off for quite some time, but I am so so happy that I finally picked this one up because Emma Chase is always one of those authors that can make me laugh and low angst and Getting Schooled definitely delivered in those areas. Getting Schooled gets started with our heroine, who is living in a big city, Callie Carpenter. She has been involved in the entertainment businessness with helping doing shows and musicals, and now she has a huge promotion, one she has been working hard for. But then she gets a terrifying phone call, Her delightful parents, got in a car accident by doing some smexy time and now they each have a broken leg. Callie is never shocked by the situations that her parents get stuck in, but now she will have to go back to her home town, across the country for a year to help care for them because her sister has her own family to take of and she can't do it on her own. So Callie puts her life on hold, moves back in with her folks, and gets a job at the high school teaching the drama class. But that’s high school boys for you—back them into a corner and they turn ugly—like Gremlins feed after midnight Garrett Daniels, is also a teacher and the head football coach for the high school and is considered to be the cool teacher on site. All the kids pretty much love and revere him. Garrett was once a all star quarterback with big dreams, but they were shattered when he got injured but he has a great life now with a good family and friends, a beautiful lakehouse and a job that is satisfying and one that he loves. But then his old sweetheart moves back home, the only woman he has ever truly loved, and sparks fly between them. He knows that what they have can only be temporary since she has a whole life in the big city and his life is in this quaint small town. This was such a fun and cute romance and I had a ball of fun with this audiobook and of course we have some of my favorite narrators working this book. It is dual POV so we have two narrators doing the different POV. One of the many things that I do love about Emma Chase, is how she handles dual POV especially the male persepective. She really does a great job with these heroes, because they are definitely not flowery or sugary like some authors write them. Emma Chase lets her personal experiece really flow into her heroes POV and I just love that. This is one of those forbidden romances that everyone will love, or mostly everyone. But what Emma Chase excells at is delivering a powerful sweet that isn't heavy with the angst or conflict. You just know that this will be the perfect lighthearted read that you can adore. And boy I had a fun time with this book. So many elements that make you laugh from the sexually charged heroine's parents (I mean seriously who gets in a car wreck from a BJ?? hehe ) the sweet dog of our hero, the antics of the siblings and the KIDS....these high schoolers reminded me why I NEVER liked High School *shivers*. But what you can rely on is that this book doesn't get heavy which I needed this past week while listening to it. I have feelings for him. I always have … But these aren’t just left over echoes of a sweet first love. This is something new. A throbbing, breathless attraction to the amazing man he’s become. I want to be near him, to know him, inside and out all over again. And he feels the same way. Garret wants this version of me as much as he always did. Maybe even more The sparks that fly between Callie and Garrett are pretty fantastic. I love how once they see each other again, their relationship takes off with flying colors. You see what a great friendship they once had and how it recovers pretty quickly despite how long they haven't seen or talked to each other. I really liked that, despite the fact that when they were younger, it didn't work out and they went their seperate ways, you also see that the love they have had, is one that picks right back up. They have some great safe sex (and yay I love Emma Chase and how she handles her sex scenes especially in handling safe sex) and we see the way that these two just come together, making out in the broom closet at the school, being there for each other through the ups and downs of being teachers. I am not a teacher but I have high respect for those that are teachers. I have an aunt that is a teacher and many friends that are, and this book really helps you admire all the hard work that goes into this career. You were always my girl, Callie. Even after you weren’t any more. The ending was NOT what I expected and I really liked how it turned out, in fact way better than I even expected and trust me with all the books in romance I have read over the years, And I really liked seeing what both the hero and heroine were willing to do to be together and it was simply perfection. Because the ending, and their sacrifice shows what a true partnership should be and Emma Chase wrapped this story up so wonderfully. And I can't wait for the next book. And P.S. THE COVER....I just wanted to mention this cover because its HOT and SEXY and it makes me want to frame this cover and put it on my wall.

When I saw the cover and even read the sypnosis, Getting Schooled seemed like a typical romance. I was so wrong! This book was so much more. When Callie goes home after her parents are injured, the last thing she expects is running in to her high school love. Garrett was a big part of her life and it was the distance that did them in. Garrett wasn't expecting to become a teacher, but when a knee injury ruins his chance at a professional career, he becomes a teacher. He loves his job and his world and the last thing he expects is seeing Callie walk into his school. Of course this book is about Callie and Garrett and their feelings for each other, but their teaching lives are involved as well. I loved how we read about the students and how they responded to them, but also how much the students meant to Callie and Garrett as well. They were really passionate about teaching and the students finding their way, I was really impressed. A lot of romance books don't add stuff like that. There is a lot of humor in this book and I love the references to different things (Hunger Games, Inside Out, Grey's Anatomy, Cards Against Humanity). This brought a smile to my face. On the other side, this book is very emotional and certain events had me crying in the train while I was reading. This book has everything I needed, romance, humor and characters you can't help but love. This was my first Emma Chase book, but it definitely won't be my last.

Callie Carpenter is forced to leave the promotion she just landed and return to her New Jersey hometown to take care of her parents after they are injured in a car accident (from road head no less, go septuagenarians). Returning home means she's also returning to the orbit of her first love, Garrett Daniels. Garrett, sexy history teacher and lead football coach, was devastated when he lost Callie. And now, she's back and its like those fourteen years never happened. Plus, she's a newly minted emergency substitute drama teacher and he'll see her every day. Just like high school all over again. Hormones and all. They immediately jump back into a sexual charged relationship, falling ever so quickly back into love. But, Callie is going back to California in ten months. And Garrett doensn't want to leave home. This was my first Emma Chase, and I adored her character development. And man, I love a good second chance romance, and this had such great bones. Garrett (and the audio narrator, cuz damn) was so sexy, and I loved his combination of smarts, protectiveness, and just all around great guy, besides being sexy AF. Callie was also great, and I loved her immediate connection with her students, her joy for teaching, and her passion for her career. My main issues came from the kind of lack of tension in their relationship? They just fell so easily back into what they had and I just wanted more sexual tension. A bit more of "we shouldn't" instead of YES, let's be bf/gf. Also, there were a lot of plot points, but not all of them were necessary, or would seem important than would fizzle out. Still, I'm glad I read this because Chase did a great job of making high school lovers who became awesome adults so very sweet (and sexy).

Find this review and more at kimberlyfaye reads. Getting Schooled gets an A+ from me! From Emma's writing to the audiobook dream team Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber, it was absolutely perfect. I usually find road trips boring and/or exhausting, but I had the best drive EVER across the mountains of western Maryland thanks to this book. I couldn't love it more if I tried.  Man. This book. I laughed, swooned and smiled my way through Getting Schooled. No lie, I was "that person" in my car, laughing my head off while reading. (Until, of course, that one super sad thing near the end of the book that had me quite literally sobbing. Holy unexpected feels.) I freaking love second chance romance and Garrett and Callie's is one of the best I've read in a very long time. I fell head over heels in love with both characters. They were fantastic and despite the time that'd passed, there was absolutely no doubt they were endgame. In fact, it was almost as though they'd never been separated at all. They were that perfect of a fit.  Anyone who reads Emma Chase's books knows she excels at writing the male POV. She's a freaking genius. Garrett is near the top of the list of my favorites of her guys so far. He was just ... real. His romance with Callie was one thing, but the way he was with his students and players made him even better in my eyes. It was obvious how much he cared about those kids. He made me laugh and swoon and even cry. Feels for freaking days with this one. And, of course, Callie was also wonderful. I loved spending time in her head, too.  So yeah, I loved every little thing about this book. I could gush about it forever. It was a total delight. I was so in love with the story that I really wanted to buy the ebook so I could finish it sooner, because there were 3 days between my days in the car. Of course, that was a big womp womp because it's not on ebook yet. It was a total lesson in self-restraint. It was all worth the wait, however, because Andi and Zachary were AMAZING. They really brought the characters and the story to life. I can't wait to see what's next in the Getting Schooled series. And to, of course, buy the audio and a paperback because I need to listen to this again and again... And I really need Garrett and Callie on my shelves. FAVORITE QUOTES “You were always my girl, Callie. Even after you weren’t any more.”
