Gossip Girl #6: You're the One That I Want

This is the sixth book in the Gossip Girl book series. College acceptance letters are arriving and Serena and Nate get in everywhere they applied while Blair is wait-listed for her dream school, Yale. Jenny becomes a model with Serena's help as she realizes she wants to be more like Serena. Dan and Vanessa decide to live together, briefly. Dan becomes irritated with Vanessa's new friend Tiphany and her ferret. I liked seeing Serena recount her previous romances and flings and coming to the conclusion that she’s never fallen passionately in love before. I liked seeing Blair be rejected by Yale and angered that Serena and Nate were accepted everywhere. I liked seeing Aaron return in this novel, I’m surprised by how much I like his character in the book series. I liked seeing Serena’s free-spirited adventures with boys and I liked seeing her enjoy her fleeting flings with random boys in this book. I thought the way that a monkey and ferret were featured in this story was too weirdly quirky, but I’m sure there are rich kids out there with similar and more exotic animals for pets. I liked seeing the birth of Blair’s baby sister and I liked seeing Blair with the baby. I’m curious to see where Dan and Vanessa’s characters go from here, and I’m wondering if Blair and Nate’s relationship will remain a focus in the future. I expected them to have broken up permanently by now. As a fan of the show, it’s strange seeing Chuck as a less important secondary character, though I still prefer this version of Chuck over the version from the television show. While I did like this book and there were some small character developments, I do still feel like there should have been more meaningful character arcs by now since this is the halfway point of the entire book series.

You’re the One That I Want is the sixth installment in the pop culture phenomenon that is Gossip Girl and is my personal favorite of the series of books. For a series that is as messy and poorly written as GG is, it’s still thoroughly entertaining, stylish and engaging.

And in this installments case, the writing has improved immensely.

In true GG fashion, its main plot line is fueled by teenagers misbehaving and narrated by the queen of gossip herself. Most of our favorite UES teens are nearing the end of their high school careers (graduation is just months away!) and seem to be branching out more and more as they discuss what their adult lives will soon hold for them.

YTOTIW promises its usual array of scandal, gossip, fashion, luxury and sex. It’s the perfect combination of teenage angst, hormones and boredom. Which is what makes it fun and appealing to teenagers. Each character is different and yet still obtainable. They can all be extremely horrible to each other, yet you want to root for them in many ways.
