An obviously well-researched novel. fast on pace, with decent characterisation. Maybe a bit overlong, but the Stalingrad component (particularly the later stages, after the Russians had completed their encirclement and the 6th Army was finally doomed in its Kessel) echoes loudly of Heinrich Gerlach's fictionalised rendering of the collective experience recounted in 'The Forsaken Army') deserved the space and time. The decent into inhumanity and barbarism - on both sides - was neccessary. 

(Incidentally, The hardback - the edition I read - was called 'Last Flight To Stalingrad'.
