I enjoyed the book up until a point when I all the run around Alan kept getting from these people in what seems like a record use of the word "dark" 
And then the ending really didn't satisfy anything 
This hate monster was just beat by a wooden board and some defiance?
It felt like softer ending than was intended.

Do you really know your friends as well as you think you do? This book was a really interesting, creepy, disturbing read. Gifune's writing style in this book was admirable and very creative. I was hooked from the start of this book. 

In a small town on the coast of Massachusetts is a small group of friends. Five boys, until Tommy is hit by a car and killed. In the present, those remaining friends are middle aged and Bernard was not the person his friends thought he was. He has committed suicide and left and odd type of suicide note. Now his friends are trying to figure out who he really was. They lead unhappy lives and take a disturbing look at their pasts in search of answers. What they find is that Bernard had some very dark secrets. He was a serial killer with a dark evil mind. The evil didn't end with the death of their friend. 

This book captivating with well developed characters and Gifune does an amazing job spinning the horror.
