I’m a long-time fan of Jim Butcher, and I’ve been reading novels by Kim Harrison lately, as well. The subject matter of this novel seems like a cross between the two, with bits taken out and new bits put in. That doesn’t make it bad, but it definitely makes it a thing all of its own, which I applaud Miss Richardson for.
 
I enjoyed this story and got through it in a couple of days. My main qualm was the fact that I felt like I was reading a polished rough draft. Yes, I know the plot, and I know the characters, but I didn’t KNOW them. I didn’t know how Seattle looked through Harper’s eyes, I didn’t know who Harper was, deep-down. I wanted to sink my hands into her prose and explore the way it felt; however, I felt like I was getting somewhat of a spark notes version, which left me hungry for more and feeling like I, personally, was trapped in the Grey.
 
As this is Miss Richardson’s first novel, I can understand why it feels like one. I do believe that she has something good going here, and I will definitely be moving on to the second book in the series sometime in the near future. Definitely an enjoyable read, regardless of any complaints.
