Banks was important to me as a boy – The Crow Road, though even darker than his sinister average, offers a sincere and positive vision of atheism – but I’ve been less enthralled on rereading the real-world novels (his scifi feel like instant classics). This is relatively light, offering the familiar Banks themes: the extended-family drama, a focus on human foibles, and globalised Scotland, which are enough.
