However, we now know that behind the practice of science lie ideological struggles, fights over power and authority, and the profit motive. The history of science is written and rewritten by the allocation and flow of capital, favors given to some projects but not others, and the needs of war.

While micro fantasies burst and are born afresh like sea spray, the macro fantasy remains sturdy.

This is like the hook for some French film, I think, or maybe a dream, either sweet or terrifying.

i really enjoyed the essays that accompany these short stories, & the caution ken liu raises about attributing these stories as allusions to the chinese govt rather than the world at large the same was we view anglosphere scifi. & of course it touched my heart how scifi writers just know so much of that intersection between arts & sciences - that progress for the sake of profit & "development" (for whom?) is not what needs to guide us, but it is love.
