Not upto the previous 4 books in the series, but yeah the story is still going good.

If I could use one word to describe this book, it would be anger. There is just so much anger in Harry, that I am amazed he didn't burst into flames or something like that. There was so much anger in the wizarding world against Harry and Dumbledore. Everybody was just so mad and it was truly heartbreaking to read. 

This is also the turning point, I think, where the series starts to take a darker turn. This is no longer middle grade but full on YA, even bordering on adult. It's become obvious that Harry isn't just a wizard and the realizations that Harry has and from what Dumbledore had told him turns this series dark. He has the responsibility of saving the wizarding world. This is clearly something Harry doesn't want and as a result he struggles. He wants nothing more than to be a normal wizard but instead he has the entire world on his shoulders. That would be enough to make anyone angry.

In some aspects, I feel for him because who wants to deal with all that. He just a 15 year old boy. He wants to go on dates and hang out with his best friends. Instead he has to deal with the wizarding world accusing him of lying and thinking he's crazy. He has to deal with a teacher that is incredibly sadistic and a headmaster that won't even look at him. He has to deal with loss in a way that he hasn't dealt with. It's a lot for a growing boy to take on. In some ways, he handles it well but in others, not so much.

On the other hand, Harry's anger and child like behavior drove me nuts at times. Yes, I understand what he has to deal with but instead of leaning on his friends in this critical time, he shouts at them and pushes them away. Ron and Hermione tried desperately to help him and talk to him but it was like he wanted nothing to do with them. He claimed they wouldn't understand and that's why he held back information from them. But how would Harry know that they wouldn't understand if they doesn't talk to them. That is one of things that piss me off. Obviously Ron and Hermione have shown that they are incredibly loyal to Harry and have stuck by him through the worst. Why can't Harry trust them?

This criticism doesn't mean I hated the book. I mean, I rated it 5 stars and put it under the favorites shelf. It shows how Harry still has so much to learn about himself and what it means to have friends. Living with the Dursley's and being neglected clearly didn't help matters any. I imagine that Harry will always struggle with having people love him and I imagine that he will always struggle with trying to not push people away.

listen if i was harry james potter i would have literally had my ""“emo episode""” in the first fucking book after being forced to live in an abusive home for ten years because the most powerful wizard of all time killed my parents and was out to kill me specifically but instead my teenaged son, harry james, goes through FIVE YEARS of traumatizing experiences and suffers people discrediting and silencing him at every turn before justifiably reaching his breaking point after watching his father figure die and you all have the nerve to call him “whiny”

OH MY GOD. I don't even have words for how much I LOVE this book. It's second in the series, to Deathly Hallows in my favourites list I just love it so much Everything about it makes me so happy. 

Why? 

Well first of all, there's leaps and bounds in terms of plot development. Things are starting to get dark, they're starting to get serious and it sets the tone for the next two books to come. I love Harry coming to take on his role as "The Chosen One"

Secondly, side characters! Thanks to the DA, we get to see soo much more of the school aside from the golden trio. Neville, Luna, GINNY, Fred and George, Dean, Seamus, Tonks, Sirius, Remus, Cho and soo many other characters who I just adore SHINE and it makes me so happy. I love the side characters as much as the trio and they get so much more screen time (page time?) then in earlier books

SO MANY COOL SCENES: I mean, the Weasley escape, the interview in three broomsticks, every DA meeting, Harry's first date, THE QUIDDITCH PITCH BRAWL, Umbridge being taken by Centaurs, the fight in the ministry, Dumbledore and Voldermorts epic duel ! There are so many scenes to love in this one. Literally iconic scenes like DA and the Weasley's leaving school can be exclusively found in ootp and I love them so much. 

I also just think OoTP is SO funny? I mean, the whole school rioting against Umbridge, the twins pranks, the DA meetings, the things said about Harry / that Harry says back. I laugh out loud when I'm reading this book, and I don't usually properly laugh when I'm reading. 

I literally just don't understand how anyone can not like ootp. I mean, beside the very sad events at the end, it's perfect. And EVEN that sad event (view spoiler)[RIP SIRIUS ORION BLACK YOU DESERVED BETTER (hide spoiler)] gives us such a beautiful moment between Albus and Harry, that is sad, but also so incredibly human and heartbreaking and such an insight into the humanity and love that drives Harry's character it's amazing. 

anyway, tbh it's harry potter I shouldn't have to say much I loved reading this with all my heart, obviously.

A cozy read for most of the book, very emotional at times, but for the first time in the series I never experienced the bizarre plot twist as I’d come to expect by now. A different book in some senses but still a very worthy read in the grand scheme of it all - and a lot to consider after finally turning the last page, leaving me ready to begin the next.

My favorite Harry Potter yet.  I liked the new characters introduced (especially Luna Lovegood) and Umbridge made my skin crawl.  Lots of laughing out loud and crying.  I also think Rowling portrays the kids' growth and maturation well.  Long read in comparison to the others, but worth it.

The fifth installment in the Harry Potter series sees Harry in his fifth year of Hogwarts; his hardest year yet. It's the end of the summer holidays and after a confrontation with Dudley Dursley and his little gang both Dudley and Harry are attacked by a Dementor, forcing Harry to use a Patronus charm. The Ministry of Magic are quick to charge Harry with the crime of 'underage magic' and it is only with Dumbledore's help and that of the Dursley's neighbour, who is infact a squib (a witch or wizard of pure blood who has no magic ability) and has been looking out for Harry all these years that sees the Ministry clearing Harry of all charges as his hearing.

Presiding at the hearing is Dolores Umbridge (a character we just LOVE to HATE) an official of the Ministry who comes to Hogwarts as the new teacher of dark arts, however, it becomes clear that not only is she there to teach; Ministry approved theory of the subject only, she is there to spy on behalf of the Ministry who continue a smear campaign against Harry, discrediting his pronouncement that Vodemort has returned once more. It soon becomes clear that for all her twee pink cardigans and pictures of fluffy kittens there is nothing cuddly about Dolores. Harry and his friends decide to form 'Dumbledores Army' and meet in the Room of Requirement in order to practice and teach one another defensive spells. It is when this group is discovered that Dumbledore, in order to protect his pupils, takes full blame and then has to flee from the Ministry's clutches, leaving Dolores Umbridge installed as the new Headteacher of Hogwarts. Meanwhile, Voldemort continues to gather more power, and his Death Eaters, to him and Harry's dream link becomes ever stronger. In an attempt to block this Severes Snape tries to teach a method to keep these visions at bay, however, this results in Harry seeing something from Severes' past that both of them wish he hadn't. Unable to control this link, Harry and Dumbledores Army are drawn to the Ministry in order to help Harry's god father, Sirius Black, who Harry has seen being tortoured in a vision by Voldemort, but he is not sure if it isn't a trap and Voldemort has also realised that he and Harry share this connection. There are battles fought and there is a death that Harry cannot prevent happening that shocks everyone. With the Ministry no longer able to keep the news of Voldemorts return a secret both Harry and Dumbledore are exonerated.

The Order of the Phoenix is often a slow read (I think this is because so many of our favorite characters, including Harry, are either moody, absent, or detestable) but I liked it much better than the Goblet of Fire. I really liked this book because we start to learn more about our favorite characters including Professor Snape, James and Lily Potter, and Sirius Black. The climax of the book is more action packed and thrilling than a Jedi duel in a Star Wars film. SERIOUSLY. The battle at the end of the book is epic and sets the stage of the war to come.

I also think that this is really (alongside of the ending of The Goblet of Fire) the turning point of the series, where we really start to some maturity seep into the story-line, and where the Harry Potter series really starts to get darker and address real-world topics head on (such as censorship, death, bigotry, etc.).

One of my favorite parts of the series, which I believe in not in the film, can be found in this book and it is a discussion that deals with the nature of death. It is the conversation between Harry and Nearly Headless Nick. Harry struggling with the death of a loved one asks Headless Nick if his loved one could come back as a ghost. Nick says that his loved one will not and that he stayed behind to haunt Hogwarts because:

"I was afraid of death [...] I chose to remain behind. I sometimes wonder whether I oughtn't to have ... well, that is neither here nor there ... in fact, I am neither here nor there [...] I know nothing of the secrets of death, Harry, for I chose my feeble imitation of life instead. "

Nick may be dead, but he knows nothing more about the mysteries of what happens next than we do. It makes Nick sad to have to disappoint Harry like this, but he can't help it. This whole exchange between Harry and Nick is interesting because it shows how death fits into the magical world and confirms, that yes, death is the great mystery.

Okay.. So I’m not saying I need a round of applause for finally finishing this book considering I started reading it sophomore year of college.. but a golf clap would be nice. The book was so thiccc and I have a small attention span sometimes, so I did audio this time around and I’m really glad I did. This movie was my least fave and I’m very pleasantly surprised that the book was legit 20 times better. Like even a smidge mad I liked it so much? A lot more background into what was going on and cleared up a lot of Dumbledores actions and explained the prophecy and the reason it matters. In the movie I was like who cares though? ALSO Harry is getting a smidge less Whine-y and entitled (go ahead and come for me but that boy expects a lot of his friends and never stops to think like hey are they cool almost dying?!)
