I've always wanted to read this series and thankfully got the chance of reading it. It was truly funny and heartfelt and although a bit egocentric, Gregory is an amazing character that would make you have a good time regardless of age. It's a definitely must read for everyone with a sense of humor.

I read this book before I had Goodreads and thought now would be a good time to reread it. I’ve made it a goal over the last couple of years to finish and/or catch up with any and all series that I’ve started in all my years of reading. Which is quite a bit. I’ve been reading seriously since about 8th grade but I’ve always been a reader. And this book is one of the many series I have started. I started it forever ago and since the series is still going, I figured I might as well finish it.

I forgot how absolutely horrible Gregory is. He is literally just a tool and just a little jerk. Sure, when you are a middle schooler, you are an asshole. I remember being pretty horrible when I was in middle school. But wow, Gregory was just awful. He was incredibly selfish, he used his friend Rowley and treated him horribly. But I suppose I should give him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think it’s super polite to call children assholes. 

But surprisingly, even though I didn’t like Gregory, I will continue with the series. I saw what the latest cover looked like and it seemed pretty interesting. Plus, the plot was interesting enough. It’s an easy-to-read book and a good palette cleanser for those difficult books about difficult topics. 

Overall, you could for sure tell this was a middle-grade book but I still think a lot of people would enjoy it. The drawings were charming, even if they weren’t top-notch. It was just a pretty cute book. Overall, this is a good book, despite Gregory.

This book, for the most part, was pretty good. I don’t think it is better than the other Diary of Wimpy Kid because it felt all over the place and kind of basic. Still a good book.

Sidenote: I don’t know when I started but you read this in a day.

What better way to take a break from reading chapter books than going back to elementary day books. Better than the previous Diary of a Wimpy Kid book I read earlier this year.

Such a funny read! I'm a soon to be middle grades teacher, and I would highly recommend this series to parents and teachers. The comics are hilarious but appropriate and there is an overall positive message, although it's not crammed down your throat. I see what all the commotion is about and I'm definitely watching the movies! Already on book 2!

I love this series. And after watching these books on kids on trains and planes, I had to read them.
Read this kindle version on Kindle unlimited to check how the font and illustrations would appear. The presentation is great.

The author is able to draw the characters in very simple way but give personality to all characters keeping the same style. Author's like Jeff Kinney helped to bring the graphic novel again into focus.

A lot of kids can relate to the main character easily and the author describes a lot of events during the year in a humorous manner. 

Books are books and movies are a completely different beast to be so I don't see a reason to compare.
I particularly enjoyed the Halloween chapter and the contest to become the next cartoonist.

Will suggest these books and will read the rest.

Greg also deals with being compared to the sons of his dad's boss, who all play sports and always seem to be outside exercising. Frank is jealous of this and wants his sons to be like his boss's sons. After conflicts over Greg wanting to stay inside and watch TV on Saturdays and Frank stealing his school snacks, Frank makes him sign up for intramural soccer. The last straw is an incident at church on Easter, where Greg accidentally gets chocolate on the back of his pants. He refuses to enter the church with the stained pants on for fear of his crush, Holly Hills, mistaking it for poop, so his mother allows him to use her sweater like a kilt. Greg gets bored during the lengthy service and teases his little brother Manny, causing Manny to throw a tantrum. The Heffley family is forced to leave, and Frank's boss saw everything, resulting in Frank becoming even more embarrassed than Greg, who had to walk past Holly.

Greg does not like his coach, Mr Litch, who yells like a drill sergeant and runs intense drills during practice. I just finished reading this book with one of my English Language Learning students so my review will be from a bit of a different perspective than most people on here. This rating comes from both myself and my student, L.
The thing I like most about this book is that Greg is around the same age as L so the story is entertaining for her, and a lot of the situations are applicable. Not that she is setting up a house of horrors in her basement, but a lot of her world revolves around fitting in at school, getting excited for holidays and doing crazy (but probably not as crazy as Greg) things with her friends. I think Jeff captures what it is like to be a regular student in middle school and the struggle a lot of students have to fit in.
The problem I have with this book mostly revolves around language. While Jeff is successful in making Greg sound like a middle school student, there is way too much slang for L to understand. Some of this is because she just hasn't learned the language yet, and it is partly because some of this slang is not as widely used in Canada (or at least by anyone around me over the course of my life). She can grasp the context, but a lot of major details about the ending of a plot line are lost on her as she encounters more and more slang as she goes along. While slang is necessary to learn, there is so much of it in this book and she cannot learn everything at once so she is left confused.
For just having a problem with language, 2 stars seems a bit low. And honestly, L would give it 3, but this is my Goodreads account. While it is entertaining for middle school students, it is not so enjoyable for me (probably because I am not in middle school). And even if I compare Greg with myself at his age, I feel like my childhood was a whole lot more exciting. And I didn't have a very eventful childhood. ∴ 2 stars.
