Go Hex Yourself

Jessica Clare2022
It's one hex of an attraction in this romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Jessica Clare. When Reggie Johnson answers a job ad in the paper, she's astonished to find that she's not applying for work at her favorite card game, Spellcraft: The Magicking. Instead, she's applying to be an actual familiar of an actual witch. As in, real magic. As a familiar to a centuries-old witch, Reggie gets a few perks. First, there's the spooky room and board. There's the ability to turn into a black cat and a bird's-eye view to a lot of magic rituals. And there's the pay, of course. If she's lucky, they'll even teach her a few spells. All of this might be fun if it weren't for her boss's arrogant nephew Ben, who keeps giving her orders like he's in charge. He's rude, dismissive, arrogant, and thinks all familiars are there just to serve him--as if! So what if he's incredibly handsome and talented and keeps bailing her out of scrapes? So what if he's an expert at magic and can't seem to find a familiar that suits him to help him cast his spells? It doesn't mean she has to lend him a *cough* hand, does it?...

I was not aware this was fanfic. I didn't even know that was a thing. The cover does not reflect the language and tone of the book. It's not cutesy/Hallmark. It's light-hearted, yes, but it's definitely modern.

Yeah, this was garbage. The main characters were so annoying. Reggie is a “control freak” and has ocd. I don’t see how she’s controlling at all but we do get endless descriptions of her tidying and organising stuff in this ancient house that nobody asked her to do and that only makes things harder for her employer. She can’t read the titles of these magical books but takes it upon herself to reorganise a 1000 year old library. Then she makes a mess and leaves. I found her reluctance to believe in magic annoying as well. It dragged on for too long when we knew that she would come around and discover she’s a witch herself anyway. Ben, a 500 year old warlock, is a “grumpy” old man. “He’s really quite smart and lovely. He’s just lonely. He’s not good with people. Never has been. His parents are to blame for that.” He’s had 500 years to get over it?? He’s lonely because he’s not a good person. He acts like a child and has been straight up mean to Reggie since the start but she hears this and her heart just melts for the poor guy. I’m all for the hate to love trope but this is not it. He’s in a position of power, constantly threatens to fire her, watches her while she’s alone without her consent, feels disappointed when he sees she isn’t masturbating. Nothing about him is remotely charming. For her part, she also watches him while he’s jerking off without him knowing but at least it wasn’t on purpose and she has the decency to come clean about it. All of this is passed off has a humorous situation which is also my issue with this book. The “funny” bits aren’t remotely funny. Her gay best friend sends her nudes that his boyfriend sent him and its only a mild annoyance to her. Bet if it was a girl that wouldn’t be okay. The cat, Maurice, is a human man trapped in a cat’s body who’s constantly rubbing up on her, following her around in the shower, sleeping in her bed and when she finds out she’s outraged for one second before he mollifies her by saying he told the cat to stay away from her. What a gentleman. The only reason I kept reading this was because I wanted to see how much worse it could get. And it kept getting worse until the end.

I waffled between 4 star and 5 star. I say this in the best way: this book is a guilty pleasure. Overtly a Reylo fanfic, with all our favorite sequel characters making cameo appearances. Just don’t take it too seriously. Just a little *too* much sex for my personal preference. But otherwise entertaining. It did what it set out to do.

A typical formula for a enemies to lovers, it was almost too simple sometimes thought and that felt like it’s downfall. A fun read but I don’t think I’d recommend it.

I thought this was a good quick read. The first third kinda annoyed me because it was repetitive but then I got in to it and ended up really like the main characters. It’s a fun world to be in a for a bit.
