My problem with the first two books was there was little happening that made you want to explore the second book other than "what's Dresden got himself into this time?". This book finally lays some foundations for relationships and a storyline that can follow up into more books. The fourth is supposed to be where these start getting really good anyway so I look forward to it!

I didn't like it as much as the second book but I think it's better than those so far. Really excited to read more about Dresden! Micheal is an awesome character, he is exactly how I think a Paladin type character should be portrayed.

Have you ever seen Last Action Hero? The one where the young Austin O'Brian falls through the movie screen into his favourite action flick and tries to convince Arnold Schwarzenegger's Jack Slater that his life is nothing but somebody's figment of imagination? The one where he looks around and retorts: "Where are the ordinary, everyday women? They don't exist because this is a movie!". 

This is how Dresden Files are. Everywhere you look your eyes are threatened to be assaulted by the abundance of boobs and ass that just jump out from behind every corner. Every female is practically a walking sex on the stick. For some reason Jim Butcher thinks I need know exactly how her dress hugs her scrumptious curves, and how Harry gets a boner every other chapter. Well, maybe Butcher isn't that crude in details, but I draw my own conclusions when I read yet again how Dresden drools over yet another piece of meat. It gets tiring. I want an ugly girl for a change. A plain Jane with braces and giant glasses. Someone who gets at least one pathetic pimple before her important date! Is that too much to ask?

The story itself began very promising with an angry spirit haunting a nursery full of newborns. The action was great, the twist was amazing, and I even liked Harry's new partner Michael (though he had tendencies to give awkward morality speeches in most inopportune moments). Then chapter after chapter the book became a repetitive mess: Harry makes a deal with his evil godmother, Harry betrays her, demon attacks, Harry gets in trouble with vampires, demon attacks, Harry screws godmother over again, vampires attack... By the end of it I just wanted the bad guys to prevail so I don't have to read godmother's vengeful rant all over again. You know, if Harry continuously made promises to me and shamelessly wriggled himself out of it, I'd be pissed too! Why would I help the guy who can't pay up what was due? And the love interest? I just couldn't care for Susan enough to be somehow moved by the dramatic twist at the end. Why would I care for the character who's been no more than a pair of tits on a nosy reporter? 

I sincerely hope that other reviews are right and book four suddenly dazzles me with its brilliance. Oh please, oh please, I really want to like this series!

I’d say this is definitely my favourite in the Dresden Files series so far, even if it felt like it followed a similar formula to the other novels. I’ve heard from some that this, and the succeeding novel Summer Knight, are turning points in the series and it really starts to pick up after those so I’m interested to see if that’s true. A solid 4 stars.

Looks like this was the undead book for Harry. It was ghosts and vamps working together and all so they could gobble up Harry. So Harry got beat up about 1000 times before finally saving the day!

The books are getting better as time goes on.

ok 3 books in now, i do get why people dislike this series/dresden's narration so much. i feel like this book in particular just exuded the most bo_burnham_straight_white_man.mp4 energy of all, it's a lot ... that being said i am still incredibly entertained and i think there were a lot of interesting things introduced in this book so idk i guess the Aggressively Heterosexual Dude moments don't seem to be outweighing or standing out above the rest of the story for me.

there were some really strong parts in this story but also some really weak ones, kind of a mixed bag here. i think the entire plotline with susan was ... contrived, to say the least, and just devoid of emotion frankly. and i think the ghosts and vampires stuff got a little muddled at times. but it played out in some really interesting scenes, especially in the entire finale. so i'm really looking forward to reading more. guess i'm hooked.

Was this really written by the same author as books 1 and 2 in this series? It sure doesn't seem like it. I started thinking about DNFing it around the 20% mark, and it's nothing short of a miracle that I eventually made it to the last page. Skimming rocks.

You're lucky, my Little Barnacles, because no matter how much I want to, I don't have time to write a never-ending rant about this one. So I'll just cut the crap and tell you why this series went from Oooh Yeah I Want More Land (OYIWML™) to I don't Give a Damn What Happens Next Territory (IDGaDWHNT™):

✘ Because the writing is sub-par.

✘ Because it feels like the book was written 20 years ago, not in 2008.

✘ Because the plot is boring. And dull. And uninteresting.

✘ Because everytime Harry said "Hell's bells" I eyerolled my little self to death and felt like smashing my Kindle against the nearest wall.



✘ Because this book made me feel like I'd missed an instalment in the series.

✘ Because blah blah blah and blah killed the story.

✘ Because I cannot stand Michael, Charity, their freaking righteousness, and incessant, exasperating, ever-moralizing religious speeches. And where the hell did these two come from, anyway?

✘ Because this story is so uninspired not even Bob the Ever-Awesome Skull managed to save it from a 2-star rating.

✘ And because I get seriously pissed off when someone kidnaps one of my hot sex slaves book boyfriends and replaces him with a pathetic, boring, sobbing copy.



» And the moral of this Crappy Non-Review is (CNR™): Harry Dresden, you are dismissed. I hereby release you from my high security harem. Please do not come back until you are your previously awesome little self again.

i’m really sad lydia just left at the end?? i wanted a mentor relationship between her and harry so badly. i also hope susan stays gone but i’m 99% certain i will not have my prayers heard. give me my single harry back

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed Grave Peril, but it didn't quite hold up to the first two for me. I think; Butcher just introduced too many new characters for my liking, and so at some points, I forgot who was who. I know this is partially to set up things for future books, but it nulled my enjoyment of this one.
