While the Egyptian, Ethiopian, and Near Eastern Christians are rooted directly in the earliest traditions of their religion, the churches in the regions south of the Sahara resulted from the missionary efforts undertaken in the context of the colonial European expansion; since the end of the colonial era these have seen an unprecedented growth, which has lasted until the present and led to a multiplicity of newly-founded churches.This modern history of the church in Africa and the Near East pays particular attention to the important contribution of local protagonists, especially regarding the significance of the multifaceted so-called African Independent Churches or the struggle of Palestinian Christians for a religious identity of their own in a primarily Islamic world. Wahrend die agyptische, athiopische und vorderasiatische Christenheit in unmittelbarer Weise in der altesten Christentumsgeschichte verwurzelt ist, sind die Kirchen in den Regionen suedlich der Sahara aus der Missionstatigkeit im Kontext der kolonialen europaischen Expansion entstanden und erleben seit dem Ende der Kolonialzeit ein beispielloses Wachstum, das bis in die Gegenwart anhalt und sich in Gestalt sehr vielfaltiger kirchlicher Neugruendungen Bahn bricht. Diese moderne Kirchengeschichte Afrikas und des Nahen Ostens beruecksichtigt den bedeutsamen Beitrag der einheimischen Akteure und Akteurinnen insbesondere im Blick auf die Bedeutung der vielfaltigen sog. »Afrikanischen Unabhangigen Kirchen« oder auch hinsichtlich des Ringens palastinensischer Christinnen und Christen um eine eigene kirchliche Identitat in einer islamisch gepragten Umwelt.
