Knife Of Dreams Book 11 of the Wheel of Time

Robert Jordan — 2010
'Epic in every sense' - Sunday Times The eleventh novel in the Wheel of Time series - one of the most influential and popular fantasy epics ever published. As the very fabric of reality wears thin, all portents indicate that Tarmon Gai'don, the Last Battle, is imminent - and Rand al'Thor must ready himself to confront the Dark One. But Rand must first negotiate a truce with the Seanchan armies, as their forces increasingly sap his strength. All is in flux as established powers falter . . . In Caemlyn, Elayne fights to gain the Lion Throne while trying to avert civil war and Egwene finds that even the White Tower is no longer a place of safety. The winds of time have whirled into a storm, and Rand and his companions ride in the vortex. This small company must prevail against the trials of fate and fortune - or the Dark One will triumph and the world will be lost. I don't fully agree with people saying this is where Jordan pulls out of the slog and writes a fast-paced rollercoaster of a novel. I agree with that sentiment for the second half of Knife of Dreams, where many of the "slog" storylines are finally resolved (most notably, Perrin's and Elayne's). However, the first half of this book is still feels very much like reading those slog books, as Jordan throws a lot of names at you related to Elayne's succession, and throws in an inconsequential chapter with a tertiary character POV such as Arymilla or one of the Windfinders who I'll never care about, nor remember what position they hold. So yes, the second half of this book gets it to a 4 star review for me, but the first half was pretty boring. Now onto New Spring as a Jordan dessert, and then the actual final stretch of the series written by Sanderson, an author who I have mixed feelings about. Am curious to see how it works out.

There were some incredible moments in this book! It felt good to get some of those incredible Jordan moments that were present in the earlier books. Books 7-10 were note terrible, but they were not the best parts of The Wheel of Time. HOWEVER - I am trusting the process that all of that info and intrigue will continue to pay off by the end of the series. It was a little emotional finishing this book knowing that it was the last that Jordan finished on his own before passing away. I am ready for the final 3 books and some Sanderson writing (it's no secret that I'm a big Sanderson fan). This has been a regular staple of my reading journey since I got back into reading about 10 months ago. Let's keep turning the wheel of time and see what happens!

“How can you say you have nothing to give? You’ve given me everything.” It’s finally picked up again and got me all sorts of emotional. Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve have all come into their own. No words can convey how much I love them.
