A decent read. I have a soft spot for strong female leads, which this book more or less satisfies. Karigan manages to get on my nerves in a few places in the book (mannerisms, reactions, stuff like that), but is a decently fleshed out character. Everyone else she encounters, however, felt a little flat. I don't know if they're fleshed out in later books, but what was shown in this book could have been better.

A decent guilty pleasure read for a short weekend trip somewhere.

I found this book on vacation, in a little bookstore for only $2 in the clearance section. I never thought it would one of my favorites. People compare this book to Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness series, and there are some comparisons. Magic, powerful female heroine, and a fantastical plot. There was a PERFECT amount of action, suspense, and lore. I never got bored, and was always excited for the next chapter.

It had a hint of romance, which I felt was unnecessary, but was subtle enough that I didn't feel impact the immersion. The characters and world introduced was something I haven't seen in a long time; unique. I feel like I have read enough fantasies to discern author's piggybacking on certain tropes, but I appreciated almost every character (except for a few obvious ones).

My favorite character would have to be (view spoiler)[ The Horse. 



He had SO MUCH spunk and attitude, that made me happy in any scene he was mentioned. Especially, when Karigan was kidnapped, and Torne was riding The Horse. I had to step away for a second to collect myself lol. (hide spoiler)]
