4⭐️ this book was such a nice surprise. It starts off slow, but once it picks up there is plenty to keep you hooked. The ability Hannah has to make you feel so deeply for characters who at the start and middle of the book are frustratingly annoying and morally challenged is a true craft. The quaint small island setting combined with heavy themes of loss, familial relationships, parental betrayal, generational hurt and trauma, give this novel the right ammunition to eventually spark joy, hope and impressive character development. The conversations felt real, but some of the characters weren’t fully polished, there were some small editing catches and although it brought me to the verge of tears didn’t actually make me bawl - thus only 4 and not 5 stars. For those who enjoy this book I’d recommend Betty by Tiffany McDaniel as well. I’ll likely pick up another one of Hannah’s books in the future.
