Didn't make it past the first couple of chapters.

The very first installment in the long running Anita Blake novels. We get introduced to our main character as she is brought in, somewhat unwillingly to help in a case of murdered vampires. After a rather intense scene with a master vampire, Anita is brought in. She is assisted by a man named Phillip, a vampire junkie, someone who loves being bitten and fed from. The two investigate a "freak" party to learn what they can. However, Anita finds herself once more face to face with the master vampire and Phillip cones to her aid. His good deed however is punished by the vampire and Anita is powerless to help him. It really makes her come off as a real character, she still gets to be a badass, but she isn't completely detached from the things that happen and how they affect her. A quick and tense scene ends this terrific first novel. The murderer is discovered and Anita is free of the influence of the master vampire, but things are far from over for Anita...

I enjoyed this book much more than I expected to. It is filled with action and just made me want to keep reading. I loved the characters and can't wait to find out more about Anita's character. I like that there are all sorts of paranormal creatures in the book (rather than just vampires there are ghouls, weres, and zombies). Definitely a fun read!

Not the best vampire book I’ve read but still has interesting concepts and themes I’d like to see more of in later books. Plus I think Anita is an interesting character. OH and Jean-Claude of course

2.5 I'm confused. I think I liked the "vibe" of the book (this nostalgic feeling of vampire literature), but the story itself seemed so... shallow? That sounds terribly mean, but that's how I felt. I guess there's more about the world in the next books, I just don't feel excited to pick them up now.

Loved loved loved this book! It was very hard to put it down, and the characters are easy to connect with and understand. Anita is by far my favorite character of the series so far, though I do have a few others that come in at a close second. This book was very enjoyable.

Okay normally I wouldn't write a review for a book I haven't finished I know this is her very first book but I can't follow it. I'm 12 chapters in and because of her writing style I have no idea still what's going on. I know she's the Reanimator or something and also called the executioner. Something about rat people vampire people and the night club? I'm going to try to finish it and possibly read a book thats later on in the series but right now I am very unhappy. I feel like I'm reading someone's thoughts not a book. I came to the series on high regards from a friend please miss Hamilton don't disappoint me and make my friend a liar

A quick read with plenty of action and snappy comebacks. Not sure if I liked it enough to read more in the series.
