An eye-opening look at the great depression and the role of central bankers, with misguided ideas about economic policy, in the ordeal. This book is one to read multiple times, but my takeaways are: 
* Economic policy (monetary policy) is guided today by our learnings during the series of catastrophies in the 1929-1931 period. 
* The gold standard was a very powerful idea that everyone clung to, to the detriment of everyone. 
* Selfishness by countries trying to be the economic superpower led to politics that fostered tensions and war.
* There's no reason to believe that we are now so wise that these things won't happen again.
* Low interest rates can easily lead to stock market speculation, which can be very troublesome.
