Ressurreição

The first novel by the undisputed master of Brazilian literature, Ressurreio (Resurrection, 1872) tells the story of Flix, an emotionally unstable and determined young man motivated by jealousy. Flix seeks to win the heart of Lvia, a widow, but his conduct leads her to end their relationship. While all of Machado de Assis' novels treat everyday life as a spectacle, even his early novels go beyond previous literature, principally by his creation of characters that tried to move up in social class, even at the cost of love.
