Very enjoyable mystery / police novel, especially if you are a francophile.

Bruno, a veteran wounded in Sarajevo, buys a tumbled-down farmhouse in a French commune where he is to be the Chief of Police. He gets to know the locals, protecting their cheese and foie gras secrets at the market from EU food regulation inspectors, coaching soccer and teaching tennis as an informal “youth outreach” program, and generally enjoying his food, wine, and quiet life. Then, as these things happen in mysteries, someone turns up dead. With a swastika carved on his chest. Can Bruno get to the bottom of this murder before the Gendarmes from Paris run roughshod over the locals? Oui!
