I watched the anime first and coming back to start the manga is such a great experience. I feel nostalgia but also a new appreciation for this story. The art is amazing, and I found myself laughing throughout. I determined I would read every volume and recommend you check it out too!

This is my second time reading Naruto, and while the art in this first volume is pretty rough, the artist gets so much better as the series progresses. The story is also pretty much a classic at this point. Anyone who loves anime and manga knows about Naruto in some capacity.

Definitely a binge worthy series. Super cute. I already watched the anime so I basically know everything that happens, but I love the illustrations!

(3.5) Promising, but I have some trepidations about the series. For one, it shows sometimes far too much that Kishimoto loved Dragon Ball—I mean, I loved it too, but at certain points ((view spoiler)[sexy jutsu (hide spoiler)], (view spoiler)[Naruto being an energetic kid with a secretly dark past (hide spoiler)]) the influence is so on the nose it feels derivative. And why do people like Sasuke so much? He seems like he's just an edgelord.

Well things definitely picked up in this volume—the series started finding its own voice, the characters get developed a bit more, and the story really starts getting interesting. I can't say it rivals Dragon Ball for me, because that series really hit for me personally in a way Naruto hasn't, for some reason. I suspect it's because of Toriyama's art style and focus on character-driven comedy, compared to Kishimoto's (somewhat) more realistic drawing and plot-driven approach.

As the bridge nears completion Naruto, Sasuka, and Sakura train heavily while they await Zabuka's next attack on Tazuna's family.

(4.5) By this point I can definitely say Naruto overcame what I saw as its initial shortcomings. The establishment of the characters is much more of a slow burn than in Dragon Ball, but as a result the development is much stronger. Things build up for the first few volumes, but here the sparks start to fly, and Kishimoto crafts emotional scenes with ease—in contrast to Toriyama, who's a master of tensions but tends to fall short in dramatizing character development (not to say it doesn't occur, but it tends to be much more subtle and over longer periods of time). I still can't say Naruto matches Dragon Ball for me on a personal level, because Toriyama's style and worldbuilding appeal to my tastes in a way few other mangaka do, but I definitely understand the hype now, and I'm on board for the ride. (We'll have to see if I make it through 72 volumes, though...)

When Naruto sees Sasuke dead, he realizes that ninjas are weapons and are trained to kill. His rages fuels the fox spirit within him and allows him to beat Haku and avenge Sasuke.

The first half might honestly be worth five stars—everything I said about the previous volume applies to an even greater degree. Just all-around great. The second half is the start of a new arc, so, while I wouldn't say it's bad, it's mostly establishing the necessary details for the next arc; not exactly the most exciting reading, espeically coming off the insane first half.

Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke have signed up for the Journeyman Ninja Selection Exams, which they must pass as a group. If the tests of skill, stealth, and battle prowess don't kill them, the other junior ninja just might.

Not as amazing as the previous two volumes, but that's a high bar. Those were covering a very itense arc really well, where here's we're dealing with a scenario that's also high-stakes, but what's at risk is mostly honor and success rather than life, death, legacy, and the fate of large town. Still, the series has definitely found its voice by this point–volume 1 felt very Dragon Ball, but now it's established a world based far more on rivalry and competition than DB, which was a lot more free-wheeling in its focus, even in its tightest moments.
