It started off pretty good and then something happened that just ruined it for me. It was so cheesy. Couldn’t continue reading.

i really enjoyed this book. the characters all were layered and dynamic and the plot was enjoyable—the plot twist actually caught me off guard and completely shocked me. i loved the thrill of it and i can’t wait to continue the series!

I gave in to tiktok to see what the hype around this book was about and I wasn't disappointed. I found Keera to be fascinating, there are so many layers to her and her story and I bet there is more to come. She has been through a lot and now is taking her power back, she is badass!

I had hesitated for so long to read this book because when people described it, I honestly got the impression of a poorly written book that just jammed a lot of tropes together. This was not the case at all. The main character is flawed and interesting, and though this is apparently a YA novel, it felt very much NA with the issues it tackled. While this was touted as a commentary on colonialism and systemic violence, I felt like it was a little light on both, and I would have liked to see her dive a bit deeper there. Perhaps she will as the series goes. I also loved the romance between her and the love interest and I think I can guess what’s happening between them. I totally called ending twist but it was still very interesting and I’m intrigued to see how our FMC will handle it in the next book!

I had a wonderful time, this was a 4.5 for me. It had such great development and I loved the characters. I won’t spoil anything but the only problem I had was the plot twist. I saw it coming and I honestly HATE when that happens. Also why do I literally not pay attention. Why did I think this was a standalone. When I was at the last hundred pages I stopped and was like how the hell is this gonna be resolved so fast. Trick question because ITS NOT. Ugh I hate myself when I do this. This is the SECOND TIME this month.

Review: I really liked this book! I thought it did so well talking about real life atrocities, such as Indian Boarding Schools, slavery and running away to freedom, and the creation of cops to stop run away slaves. The book focused a lot on the political/humanitarian side of the issues, a lot like Ash Princess, and it did well with the enemies to lovers romance (and there’s even a one bed trope!). Overall, I felt like the character development was well done and the world building was great. The book is very well written and I can’t wait for book 2!

However, I did have issues with the slow pacing of the book overall and I felt like the action build up was super slow as well. There were some time skips as well that I felt didn’t help further the plot. But my biggest issue is that I don’t understand why this book is shelved as young adult fantasy. The MC is 68 years old in the book and there are some graphic sex scenes in the book. There’s also a character in the book who is a teen that the MC sees as a child, which is a great indication of this not being a YA book. While the book could definitely be passed off as NA because the MC says that due to her slow aging, I don’t agree with the YA shelving because it contain NA/adult themes rather than YA.

I'll be honest, i was so excited to start this book with all the positive reviews i read on it, but it fell short for me. The romance between Keera and Riven felt like it started way too soon. They were supposed to be enemies and i love a good enemies to lovers but it felt rushed. It also felt like the author strived to put every well liked trope into the book without worrying about if it fit into the story. I have super mixed feelings about this book the whole way through. With that being said, i do feel like the actual pllt of the story was super thought out and the world building was amazing. I did wind up enjoying the book in the end and if the author were to release a sequel, i would definitely read it.

I picked up this book because of all the fuss around it on Booktok. Was I expecting a masterpiece? Not really, it was mostly curiosity and the cover is pretty so... Yeah, don't judge a book by its cover and all that.

The first half of the book was slow, like snail slow. It seemed like Keera, the MC, was running in a circle and honestly nothing was happening but thankfully it picked pace when she arrived to the Faeland.

The worldbuilding left me with more questions than answer tbh. There were a lot of question marks for me. Like why the fae where accepted and not the elves? And what are exactly the trials for the Arsenal? 

As the author is a member of Booktok, she's got all Booktok favorites tropes in this book: 
- Enemies to lovers 
- Slow burn romance
- Morally dark MCs 
-The one bed trop 
- The found family trop 
And so on. 

One thing that I loved about this book is the female MC. I usually am all about a bad ass female but this one was something else entirely. She's strong and she knows it, even stronger than the male MC, Raven, a fact that she doesn't forget to remind him about. She's like a sixty-year-old Halfling( half mortal and half elven) something that I personally never saw before. All the other females I'm used to are teenagers or in their mid-twenties so Keera was a breath of fresh air. 

The end left me with even more questions that I can't wait to find the answers to.

This was honestly better than expected. 
It's described as "everything BookTok loves" and I certainly do not love everything BookTok seems to like but this story was truly interesting and I liked it better than some other popular (YA) Fantasy series.
Some parts irked me though. But I can see why other people might like it (I think?)
While I could see the ending coming I liked how it was set up and it acts as a nice starting point for another book.
OH, and I think I could've done it without the romance.
