Amoxicillin is a widely-used antibiotic medication belonging to the penicillin group of drugs. It is usually prescribed to treat infections caused by certain bacteria. Amoxicillin is the popular name of the brand drug Amoxil, a drug that is used for treating bacterial infections. The drug was first approved by the food and Drug management (FDA) in the 1980s. Today, there are many brand names from companies producing amoxicillin. Doctors and health practitioners often prescribe amoxicillin to help treat infections caused by a range of bacteria that is sensitive to amoxicillin. Examples of such bacteria are staphylococcus, E. coli, streptococcus, and H. influenza. It can additionally be used alongside some medications to treat stomach ulcers due to H. pylori infection.
