What vampires are and how they interact with human society has changed over the years. Within my lifetime the three most influential people in how vampire stories are told have been Anne Rice, Joss Whedon, and Stephanie Meyer. Chen's novel is a dialog with those texts along with exploring what it means to be a hyphenated American (be it Chinese-American or Vampire-American, or in the case of Louise Chao Vampire-Chinese-American).
