one of those books i’d never spoil if someone asked, because everyone should experience it firsthand to truly feel what i felt. bawling my eyes out, crying a river, feels like theres a bullet in my chest. very heartbreaking and i cant stop thinking about what really happened to monday for several weeks. for a slow reader like me, finishing a book with 400+ pages in 3 days really means something. this book does, always have a special part in my heart.

This is simultaneously one of the best books I’ve read and the worst. Tiffany D Jackson has yet to fail me with how unnerving her writing can be. I  was immersed at every turn of the page, and as much as I wanted to take a break due to the heavy content, I could not. This is definitely a heavy topic, but while it’s technically fiction, it tells the story of many who deserve focus and recognition. Jackson has become an “automatically read” author for me, and I just appreciate her voice and perspective so much.

           I applaud Jackson for writing about missing black girls. There’s little to no coverage, and the only people looking for them are their family, friends, and community. I hope the hype of this book encouraged some to do more, but I know it probably didn’t since black girls are still going missing right now with little to no coverage.

I don’t understand how anybody can be okay with just playing along with Claudia’s sleuthing. Why wasn’t she given help? She should’ve been gone to a therapist. I really don’t get how anybody would possibly think like that. It doesn’t seem like a reality to me, so I give it 2 stars.

this book was amazing. Great cast of characters that make you want the best for them. I cried while reading, it was absolutely heartbreaking. the only thing I didn’t enjoy was that the timeline/chapters could be a little confusing, but otherwise another favorite from tiffany! <3

Let's just say: starting on page 1 i wanted to know what happened to Monday. When I learned what had happened to Monday, I wished I had never found out.

**3.5 i think... idk the entire time i was hooked just because i wanted to know what happened to Monday which isn’t really (?) the point of the book which is why i rated it low. also SPOILER kind of but the entire plot is just a retelling of a real life case from a couple years ago which really annoyed me so ya! it was good and kept me hooked though.

This quote perfectly sums up what is one of the underlying messages in this novel. When I first began reading this book, I did not expect anything that happened would happen, which was a nice surprise. It was very well paced (in the beginning at least) and it was easy to understand the roles that the characters play along with each other. 
As much as I really enjoyed the story, there were two things throughout the novel that really confused me the whole time: the timeline and the voices of some of the characters. At the beginning of each chapter it is divided up into sections like 'The Before', 'The After', 'One Year Before the Before' and so on. There is also some chapters just labeled as certain months. Now, the timeline in the beginning did not really confuse me. It was easy to follow along of what was happening because of the characters and what they were doing during that time, but towards the middle of the book it was very hard to understand what the difference was between the before and the after because the characters would focus on something from the before in the after and it never really explained the time difference between the two until the end. Also, the voices of the younger characters, like Claudia, Monday, Michael, Megan and so on did not match a lot with the character themselves and what they were doing. Especially with Claudia and Monday, Monday sounded much older, like a few years older than Claudia, but they were in the same grade, basically experiencing the same thing before the events that lead to Monday's death. Claudia kept reminding me of this very young girl, who was always lost and confused and waiting for a parent figure, like Monday to come and rescue her from her downfalls. I do like Claudia and I like how loyal she is to Monday no matter what happens between them, but I really wanted to see Claudia become more independent and see her voice develop into her own without sounding very young. The characters who are about a year or so older than Claudia, sound like they are already out of high school and are watching over Claudia throughout the novel, even though they are only about one year older. This made me very uncomfortable and confused about it in some passages (especially when Claudia went to that party) and then I had to remind myself that they are almost the same age. 
The timeline began to make sense after it is revealed how Monday and her younger brother August was found in a freezer, and how hard it was for Claudia to cope with her best friend's death, somewhat forgetting that Monday actually died years ago. 
I really enjoyed the development of Claudia and how she was always trying to figure out what happened to Monday, but also trying to move on with her life. She never forgot about Monday and she never stopped fighting for her friend, but it also frustrated me that she was confused about seeing Monday being scared of her mom and seeing the bruises on her. It was interesting finding out that her teacher and the school nurse actually cared about her and not just let her suffer in silence. but I do wish something more was happening to try and protect Monday. Especially with Claudia's mother, who could most likely see how hard it was for Monday, but she still decided to not really help her in the long run. 
I really enjoyed the story and it kept me in the story the whole time, no matter how confusing the timeline and the voices could be sometimes. The more I read the more I forgot about it and was immersed into the story. I really appreciated how the author didn't shy away from showing her readers that kids, especially African American kids could be pushed to the side and not be viewed as important as white kids when they go missing or when they are in a very dangerous position. It was a great read and really opened my eyes to things I never had to experience.

This is a pretty heartbreaking and sad book and I was eager to keep reading and get to the end....but I was letdown when it was all over with. The story is a bit disjointed, and it's meant to me, but it's more than that, it's kind of a mess. But I can forgive the mess because there was so much to like about the characters and the mystery of Monday, but....3.5 stars.

           bro the ending was not expected. like the freezer???!!! how sick do you have to be to put your children in a freezer in your living room and leave them there knowing they were there? like thats messed up and she would put them in closets and lock them in there as punishment. i honestly don't know what i would do if that ever happened to me

Lol, I know I dropped it but it got me hooked at the very beginning, I just got tired of it, it frustrated me how no one saw that Monday was missing and her mother!! Her mother is a LITERAL piece of ******. *See what I did there😛

What the f..... That ending... shooked. I don't even know what to feel at this point. Definitely look over the trigger warnings before reading this book. Couldn't put this book down and that would honestly be a good thing, but I don't even know if it's a good thing for this book. I'll probably dream about it tonight- I had a gut feeling I knew what was going to happen at the end, and I was correct... crying. Not sure if what I said made sense but 🤘.
