Morrighan A Remnant Chronicles Novella

Before borders were drawn, before treaties were signed, before wars were waged anew, before the great kingdoms of the Remnant were even born and the world of old was only a hazy slate of memory told in story and legend, a girl and her family fought to survive. And that girl’s name was Morrighan. In Morrighan, a prequel novella to Mary E. Pearson's The Remnant Chronicles, a girl and a boy from enemy camps meet, fall in love--and set history in motion.

Since this book was a novella it was definitely a quick read but one that was very entertaining. After reading about all the other theories behind how and why Morrighan came to be with the scavengers in the Remnant Chronicles series it was amazing to hear how it actually happened! Highly recommend for anyone anxiously awaiting the release of the 3rd book like me!

A novella about the life of Morrighan, a girl of the remnant with a special talent that will lead a band of people to new lands. The story of how she meets an enemy scavenger and how their unusual relationship brings hope to a devastated world.

Trigger warnings: some sexual content, abuse and war killing.

Prequels are a tricky thing. It’s hard to go backwards and give information that fits with the later stories and still gives new insight. This one was SO well done! In The Remnant Chronicles, the later kingdom Morrighan has such a propagandized version of her story, and it’s important that we learn over time that it’s not the real/true/whole story. This novella takes that idea and brings it to such beautiful life! I thoroughly enjoyed this, read it in one sitting, and really appreciated the subtle commentary on how histories are changed to suit new purposes. Honestly, just. Such a great YA fantasy universe.

For what it was, it was enjoyable. Part of me does wish that this had been a full book of its own though.

3.75/5 Even though it took me a while to read (for my own reasons), I quite enjoyed this novella. Morrighan was an interesting character, so was Jafir. And I liked how their relationships progressed. I'm really waiting for the last book in the trilogy, so I hope August will come soon.
