Um. I sort of thought I'd get something out of this book--something about multiple choice/ standardized tests, but I really didn't. I might have gotten a little about Chilean history, but it wasn't grounded enough to be very meaningful. I might have gotten something about this particular family and it's particular dysfunctions, but again, it was too unmoored from any sort of context to be meaningful. Interesting read, definitely, but overall lacking in meaningful grounding. Nigh impossible to wrest any meaning from. Not really intended to wrest any entertainment from.

This is a creative and interesting approach, and I really enjoyed the first half or so. The book must have been difficult to translate because there is so much wordplay, at least toward the beginning. The sentence order section was my favorite because it made me think about how the tone and meaning of a story can change with clever editing. By the end, I was tired of parsing sentences and reading so many satirical, even cynical interpretations of things. I suppose that fits in with the overall theme and commentary on the education system, but I found myself saying 'Enouh already'.

bought this many months ago and never had the courage to get past the first couple of pages. Read it mostly today. I don't really know how to feel... it's magical and devastating.
