Loving the concept and the character dynamics. The art is also very charming. Interested to see where the story goes!

This was very atmospheric and bittersweet. The art was gorgeous. I don't think I'll continue with the series, but simply because I particularly liked the way this volume ended.

Chapters 11-15

I might have misunderstood something from the last volume because I found out that the old woman was actually the Auntie that the little girl Shiva have known, not some random old lady that was disguised to lure her. But even so, my suspicions only grew because she was the one who abandoned Shiva. There are some crumbs of hints left here and there about the mystery around Shiva's origin but it's so incoherent that I can't grasp the meaning of those hints yet. All I knew is that Shiva's origin is deeper than I initially thought. Especially when the Auntie told the Teacher that Shiva was already abandoned once before her. I don't even know if that Auntie is her blood-related aunt or not.

This volume is equally sad and heartwarming. It makes me so sad to see the Teacher desperately chasing after Shiva, despite being continuously attacked by the soldiers. He wanted to get Shiva back so bad but he's hesitating as well because even he doesn't know what's good for the child. He got her back before the volume ends and I'm glad it didn't get dragged out. His sincere concern truly touched my heart. The way he took care of her when Shiva got sick after saving her makes me so soft and I just wanted them to peacefully live their lives together. 

Though the two are together again, the mystery element deepens once more.

Chapters 30-35 

The two soldiers who were cursed managed to find both Shiva and Teacher, who were unfortunately separated due to Teacher finding his locket. With the help of the crows, Teacher got rid of one of the soldiers but Shiva wasn't so lucky. She tried to escape but the soldier grabbed her and almost killed her, but in the last moment, he turned into a tree just like what happened to Auntie. 

Teacher found her under that tree but I was shocked to see thatshe got a black patch on her chest, one of the symptoms of someone who was affected by cursed. I don't know how that happened, since from the earlier part, Shiva was already considered as the 'pure soul' who was blessed and protected by God. That's why she was chased by those Insiders and protected by those Outsiders, because of her pure soul. But now it seems like she was also tainted. I don't know exactly when the symptom showed up and whose cursed it was from, but of course Teacher blamed all of it onto himself. Which was already part of his personality because of how much he cares for Shiva, but I still feel very frustrated when the happened. 

When Teacher found out she was cursed too, this one Outsider reminded him of another way to possibly saved Shiva, and that is to steal a soul before the curse completely spread on Shiva's body and replace her tainted soul. There's no guarantee it would work but they have no other idea. Teacher decided to do that, steal a soul from another batch of soldiers who were presently chasing after Shiva and just simply be a monster for her sake. But in the end, he hesitated to kill and in the process lose his own foot and let the soldier escape. I don't know if I praised him for staying true to his kindness but ass much as I love Teacher for being so sweet and kind and sincere, he was so naive and indecisive and self-loathing. That part of him frustrates me a lot. 

As he was going back to their house, he was lost in thought as to what he should do next as they are running out of time because of Shiva's condition, a crow noticed Shiva's shoe in an open space. He hurriedly ran back to the house to see that it was empty. And Shiva is gone. I don't know if Shiva simply left but I'm betting that she was captured by the other soldiers. 

And that was another thing that I wanted to rant about. Teacher already blamed himself because he left Shiva alone, causing her to be almost killed by that soldier who turned into a tree. He already promised to himself that it won't happen again and he would protect Shiva properly from then on. But he still left her alone this time, in the middle of the night, to steal a soul, knowing that the soldiers are not too far away from where they are. I would rather him be a cruel one that staying as a tamed and naive one. It really wouldn't help him having that kind of personality in this situation. But I guess, that's his nature. Unfortunately, even though he has this strong desire to protect Shiva, he still failed to do so this time.

I just want to save our precious child from all these!

Chapters 36-40 

This volume is an absolute heartbreaker. And this is also where I realized that Shiva, a little girl that she is, is such a brave soul despite her young age, even braver than Teacher and any other character in this series. 

The last volume ended where Shiva has gone missing. I actually thought she was captured but she actually gone outside to find Teacher's locket that was lost. According to her, it was always the Teacher who always do good things, so she wanted to repay him by finding the most important thing for him. The curse is continuously spreading in her body, and both she and Teacher can see it, but she still insist on saying that it didn't bother her. Teacher, right then and there, realized what he has to do. And then he gave her his own soul.

But that sacrifice led to a direction that hurts Shiva more than anything. The curse is gone but her Teacher is gone too. Atleast the Teacher she knows. By removing his soul, he is now just like the other Outsiders, an empty vessel who soon can turn into a tree. And whose memories are gone. Seeing how Shiva's face full of joy and innocence slowly faded the moment she realized Teacher doesn't remember her, or anything that happened while they were together. It's just so painful to see. But she still tried not to cry once again and put up a brave face, hiding her pain behind her cheerful smile while trying to make her Teacher remember. 

Then the soldiers came and captured Shiva. Teacher didn't try to save her. She just watched him look at her, turn around and leave. And she still didn't cry. She also didn't try to resist. It was like the moment Teacher turned his back on her, she lost the will to do anything. Even when she was led to the ceremony, where she would be sacrificed and her soul be taken, she just obediently do as she told, looking so lifeless. Even when the sword was right above her, she did nothing. But when the King asked if she has a message she wants to deliver, she wanted to say that she has no one left, and she actually said it. But then all her memories with Teacher suddenly popped into her mind. That's when she finally cried. It was a really distressing cry that it also made me tear up. 

In the end, the ceremony was disrupted after the King collapsed. Shiva remained locked up for days before the ceremony resumes, and then an unknown figure suddenly appeared outside of Shiva's room, explaining about the cowardly and unsuitable King and the condition of the Insiders. That figure gave back the locket to Shiva and gave a parting words, 'it doesn't change her fate but it was still too easy to give up'. After crying once again while clutching the locket, her smile came back. I don't know who he is but thanks to him, Shiva gained a purpose. She still wanted to stay with her Teacher. 

I already expected to have a sad scene like this because of where the story is headed, but I just wished that after all of the pain, both Shiva and Teacher can have their peaceful life back. I really adore and respect Shiva on another level and I want to see her happy ending.

Chapters 6-10

We've got to see those they called 'Outsiders', those black, horned beast that looked just like the Teacher calling Shiva the 'pure soul' and trying to get her soul, but of course Teacher wouldn't let it. According to the information the story mentioned so far, touching someone who's 'cursed' can make you cursed as well and turned into something like the Teacher but it's intriguing that even after the Outsider touched Shiva, there's no obvious signs that she'll become an 'Outsider' too, which maybe connects to the clue that she's a 'pure soul'? But for real, Teacher's sincere care for Shiva just warms my heart so much. 

I just wonder if there's something wrong with the Teacher's memory because I just noticed that there are multiple scenes where Shiva was like 'Didn't you told me that before' and the Teacher would answer, 'Did I? I don't quite remember', and Shiva would jokingly said 'You seem to always forget what you said', along those lines. I don't know if I'm overthinking, but that's actually kind of suspicious. And the Outsider also called the Teacher an ignorant for not knowing a lot about the curses and the Outsiders. I would love to see more backstory of him, as well as Shiva's.

The people from inside the wall are also setting their eyes on Shiva and even used an imprisoned old lady and disguise her as Shiva's auntie to try and lure her. I don't know what their plans are but I don't like the vibes I'm getting. I'm actually getting kind of anxious as to where this story is going. Please don't let Teacher and Shiva be apart!

Chapters 41-45 

That last part of the volume crushed my heart. After the King discovered the real purpose of the priest for wanting to obtain Shiva, which is not her soul but her body herself to turn it into a vessel for the 'Holy Father'. Because of the truth, the King wanted to spare Shiva and bring him back outside the Kingdom. Before the priest managed to complete the ceremony, Shiva managed to successfully escape from inside the wall with the help of the King and one of the soldier. That soldier used to know the doctor Albert, who I suspected was Teacher's real identity.

But what awaits Shiva outside is not something even me, most especially Shiva expected to see. Teacher has turned into a tree. The way Shiva looked was absolutely heartbreaking. She tried to hugged him and apologized. One of the branches moved as if caressing her head, as if trying to comfort her. And from that physical contact, the curse slowly spread across her body. I thought that once she was free of that curse, she was no longer vulnerable but the fact is she once again had a physical contact with someone with the curse and it can still infect her. But personally, it might be heartbreaking to end up like that but having the same fate as the only person who you can be with, I guess that's really not as bad as it seems. There's two more volumes after this but I don't know how the story is going to end.

Chapters 1-5

This is actually a very intriguing way to start a story. So much mystery and there's definitely a lot more to unveil, whether about the little girl Shiva or the peculiar but obviously sweet Teacher. The art of this manga is eerie but there's something dreamy about it as well. I love the Teacher's soft spot towards Shiva but he's too protective to the point where he's hiding the truth from the little girl. I don't know where the story is going but I'm hooked.

It's all finally starting to come together. The world-building is top notch and the art work is hauntingly beautiful but bruh these cliffhangers!!!

Clearly related to Yamazaki's "The Ancient Magus's Bride," and I suspect it came first. It's almost more of an allegory than a story, though I suspect it will be hard to maintain the mysterious vibe in subsequent volumes.

I haven't read much manga before, but it caught my eye while browsing in SF's Kinokuniya. Definitely picking up the next volume.
