Visions of Heat Psy-Changeling, #2

Nalini Singh2007
Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly sought after ability to predict the future. Then the visions show her something even more dangerous—aching need . . . exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she yearns to embrace could be the end of her. Changeling Vaughn D'Angelo can take the form of either man or jaguar, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly drawn to Faith. The jaguar's instinct is to claim this woman it finds so utterly fascinating and the man has no argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who need Faith's sight for their own purposes. They must keep her silenced—and keep her from Vaughn.

Nalini’s writing gets a little better in this book and introduces new world building aspects, but the strength of the series is just starting to show itself.

After reading the first one I was intrigued by Vaughn and thought his story might be different from the mates stuff because of the way he was presented in book one. Shows what I know, this was entirely too similar to the first one. It had the same alpha male mating with the inexperienced psy and I really would’ve liked something at least a little different even if we were going to go the mates route. I’m still interested in this world but binge reading this series isn’t going to be an option for me.

It has been a few days since I read this book, and although I enjoyed it my thoughts are kind of lukewarm. I think my biggest issue with these books is the writing. There is something about the writing and the logical progression of the story that is lacking for me. I keep wanting and expecting more. I also dislike how similar the plots of the first and second book were. I like a good murder mystery in my romances, but I don't like the fact that it was almost identical in each book. I can understand books that are formulaic, but they get boring quickly. As far as the romance I did like Vaughn and Faith's romance more than Lucas and Sascha's. Although Faith couldn't handle touch for the majority of the book it still seemed spicier than the first book. I have hope that as I continue the series the books will get progressively better.

2.5 meh stars + 0.5 stars for the world building. What went wrong here? I don't really know. It just feels like I've just read a poor version of Slave to Sensation, with more romance and less suspense/action. The world building is still great but I expected Singh to dig a bit deeper here. Granted, the NetMind/DarkMind thing is pretty cool and we get to learn a bit more about the Silence Protocol but that's as far as Singh goes in terms of world expansion which is a bit disappointing. There is talk of revolution within the Psy-Net though so I still have high hopes for the rest of the series. I have to admit that I was a bit taken aback when I first started reading this book because I thought it was going to be about Sascha & Lucas. I never expected it to be about different characters. Is this the way PNR series work? Once I got past the initial surprise I was happy to read about new characters but the problem here is that they aren't as strong as in the previous book. Worse, I had a hard time connecting with them. Vaughn is too much the typical dark/brooding/loner alpha and Faith is pretty uninteresting. Wait, let's not be too harsh here, there is something interesting about Faith: her father. I'm really curious about him and I can't wait to see what Singh does with his characters. The sexual chemistry between Vaughn & Faith isn't that great and the sex scenes themselves were disappointing and not as well written as the ones between Sascha & Lucas. So no, Visions of Heat didn't have me throwing my underwear across the room. Too bad, I was more than willing to. Although this was a disappointing read I still want to continue with this series. I love the world building too much to give up now and I'm told Caressed by Iced is one of the best instalments in the series. I didn't really like what I saw of Judd here but I can't wait to see how this particular iceman thaws *rubs hands in anticipation*

first reread: August 2021, I loved this book even more than the first time and it's 5 stars now. I think it might be because I love this world and the characters but still. I can't get enough of Faith and Von Rating: 4.5 Even though I rated it lower than book 1, this book is still AMAZING. Nalini Singh can write and only having read a couple of her books, she's already a favorite author of mine🖤

I've read this book twice now and I thought I'd written a review first time around... turns out not so much. And this is why my reviews end up slapdash, I write them two weeks later and can't remember what happened. I did enjoy a lot of things in this book. The two MCs (Vaughn and Faith) were interesting and I loved their dynamic. I did feel like parts of the book were a little dragged out and obviously, it's a little sex heavy. I would have liked fewer sex scenes and a little more focus on the mystery because the romance was strong in this but it meant the mystery felt a bit lacklustre and boring. Everything was resolved far too easily and it was a total let down. I still enjoyed the book (and am hella intrigued where the third books gonna go) but it let itself down in some ways. But might not have been in the mood to read it by the end so that didn't help.

3.75 stars. I would’ve given it 4 but the ending dragged on. The first one was hotter, but I liked the relationship in this one better. But neither has had me totally hooked yet. It feels a little info-dumpy for a paranormal which I’m not crazy about. But I’ll continue since I hear it keeps getting better!

Rounded down from 3.5. The Psy-Changeling politics and worldbuilding continue to develop. We learn more about the workings of the Net and very interesting things are being set up for the larger story arc. There is another serial killer to track. There is a new couple coming together. Faith is a very important F-Psy, or Forseer. She has been kept in nearly complete isolation most of her life because F-Psy are very mentally fragile and likely to go insane. She is disturbed when she realizes that she is starting to have different kinds of visions than her usual business forecasts. There is a darkness visiting her to share gruesome plans of murder. She doesn't realize these are future reality until her sister is killed in the same way the visions showed her. This sets Faith on a mission to find and stop him from succeeding with his next victim. Vaughn, a Jaguar changeling, is waiting outside for Faith to break free from the oppression of her Silence training and the Psy-Net. He is a sentinel in the DarkRiver pack that Sacha joined when she disconnected from the Net. He will lead her to tolerate sensation and the emotions locked away inside her. In some ways the journey Faith has to go on is quite similar to Sacha, as far as overcoming the manipulation and misinformation she has been imprisoned by. They both were afraid of loosing their minds completely. They both slowly open up to emotions. In that way it feels a bit like just more of the same. So, not quite as fresh and exciting to me as the first one. Still, I was happy to be back in the world.

Great I have all the Psy-changling books in hard format and now getting them in eBook format to save the from over reading damage and I have found that there are new bits to the home that I have never read before it's like reading a whole new book I love it. 8t might cost me a fortune but for quality writing you don't mind and I can honestly say they are worth it if you follow the series it's a promise I don't take lightly there are books you need to read.
